For this formative we were given 4 questions to solve about patterns and sequences.

In the first question we were given a sequence of numbers and told to describe the pattern and

write the formula to find the nth term. The sequence given was 3, 7, 11, 15, 19.

First I found out the difference between the terms which was 4, so I described the pattern as

an arithmetic pattern where you add 4 to the previous term. To find the formula I did

Tn=3+(n-1) which then equals to 3+4n-4 and finally it gave me the formula Tn=4n-1. I then

applied this formula to make sure that it works.

In the second question it is said to explain the difference between arithmetic and geometric

sequence with examples. So I had the prior knowledge that an arithmetic sequence had

something to do with addition and subtraction while a geometric sequence was related to

multiplication and division.

So I did some research and found out that an arithmetic sequence has a constant difference

between the consecutive pairs. For example in the sequence 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 we are adding

4 to the previous term, which also means that the constant difference in this example would

be 4.

The difference between a geometric pattern is that in the end we are left with a multiplier

since there is a constant ratio between each consecutive pair. For example in the sequence 4,

16, 64, 256,1024, 4096 we are multiplying the previous term with 4, we know that the

multiplier is 4 because 16/4=4 or 64/4=4.

For the third question we were given a pattern of triangles and told to find the next few terms

and explain the rule for the pattern. In the pattern it showed many layers each pyramid had

and also the number of dots. From this I drew the next pyramid which had 5 layers and 21

dots. Then I found out that the rule being followed was you add the number of dots you have

then add the next nth term and then add 1 which will give you the next number of dots. For

example to find how many dots the sixth layer would have we would do 21(number of

dots)+6(next nth term)+1=28(next number of dots).

Lastly for the fourth question we were told to construct our own pattern and create a table to

show the first five terms. For the pattern I choose to draw a pattern with shapes, the first term

has three shapes(1 triangle, 1 rectangle, 1 circle) then as the pattern goes on you add three

more of the same shape. The pattern that I created was an arithmetic pattern and I also

constructed a table to show the first five terms.
