Dividing 3- to 4-Digit Numbers by 1- to 2-Digit Numbers

In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-digit divisors without and with remainder, follow
these steps:
• Take the first number on the left of the dividend. If the first digit of the dividend is
less than the divisor, take the first two digits.
• Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down.
• Repeat the same procedure up to the last digit in the dividend.
• If the quotient is not exact, it means that there is a remainder, write the
remainder beside the quotient.

Example: Find the quotient of 621 divided by 8.

Dividing 3- to 4-Digit Numbers by 10, 100 or 1 000 With and Without
Regrouping

• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10 with remainder, the last digit in the dividend is
the remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
745 ÷ 10 = 74 r 5
3 487 ÷ 10 = 348 r 7

• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 100 with remainder, the last two digits in the
dividend is the remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
923 ÷ 100 = 9 r 23
8 167 ÷ 100 = 81 r 67

• In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1 000, the last three digits of the dividend is the
remainder while the remaining digits represent the quotient.
Example:
5 148 ÷ 1 000 = 5 r 148
3 928 ÷ 1 000 = 3 r 928

Estimating the Quotient of 3- to 4-digits Dividends by 1- to 2-digits
Divisors with Reasonable Results

In estimating the quotient of 3- to 4-digit dividends by 1- to 2- digit divisors follow the

following steps:

• Always use rounded numbers to estimate quotients.

• Round the dividend and the divisor to their highest place value.

• Apply the rules of cancellation for dividing rounded numbers.

• Compare your estimated quotient to the actual quotient to make sure if the

estimated quotient is reasonable.

Example:

Lito can encode 63 words per minute. About how many long will it take him to encode a
story with 685 words?
