As a National Discipline Awardee, what can I do to make this country a better place to live in?

I must admit that I am engaging into a huge challenge when I was considered as one of the
nominees for the National Discipline Award. Even my mother was surprised when she learned
about this but I know she is happy and already proud of me. Based on the research I made, this
program was established in 1990 because of the aspiration of the internationally recognized
humanitarian Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco, to instill national discipline among the Filipino
youth. Thinking about it made me realize that I really have to take a part in the AY Foundation’s
commitment towards the advancement of our nation. Now I feel fortunate that I have this
privilege.
So, what can I do now to help the world? A world that needs healing from violence, chaos,
destruction, food shortage, climate change, global warming, viruses, and many other problems
which make it a frightening and threatening place to live. Scary for just recently, John Matthew
Salilig, a student of Adamson University was found dead, almost unrecognizable in a vacant lot
in Imus, Cavite. What seemed to be his willingness to be a member of a Fraternity which was
built on common goals of spreading peace and prosperity in the world turned out to be the
cause of his untimely death. Where is the spirit of brotherhood? How can a neophyte be a
loyal member of the group when a simple paddle stopped him from doing so. “O my God! I am
begging You to send forth Your Holy Spirit to guide and anoint the minds of Your people to
listen to Your words and to obey Your commandments. Let there be conversion and
transformation among us”. This is one of the things I can do in my capacity at present times as
a son, student, and an ordinary member of a community – Pray.
In my prayers I will include my action plan to be always mindful and careful in what I am doing.
Just by simply being kind to my own self, to my family, to everybody and to our environment is
already an act of making the world beautiful. Simple acts of recycling, full utilization of the
resources we have at hand, living and enjoying a simple life are proven effective ways
contributing to have a better place. More so, I am making a commitment to join my parents in
building a garden for it is rewarding to harvest own fruits and vegetables and have the chance
to share them with our neighbours. Conserving electricity and reducing the use of electronic
and digital devices are sure moves to help in having a sustainable energy for all of us.
I will study very well to gain knowledge and have a better understanding and discipline of the
good things that I can do for this planet Earth that God created for us and yet expecting us to be
good stewards of this wonderful HOME. It is my conviction that there is always hope for a
peaceful life because I am seizing the opportunity to share my capabilities to the fullest. I am
determined to spread love, and creating an impact in the society through the grace of God, the
Giver of life.
