Câu 2:

Have your say!

Today’s complaint is from Mr P. K. Lipton in Somerset and concerns news
bulletins.
News bulletins
How often should we be given news updates on TV? Traditionally the viewing
public has had fairly regular news updates on most major channels in
comprehensive hour or half hour long programmes that bring us a range of
different information and opinions about important newsworthy events from our
own country and around the world. We all know the times of these programmes
so we can choose what and when we want to watch. In addition to these news
programmes there are, of course, the channels dedicated to 24-hour news
coverage. What is putting my back up at the moment is a new supplement to the
regular programmes – 60 second news bulletins, hourly during the evening.
I imagine this has come about because the news bosses think we shall all be
thrilled to get a news update every hour but I have to say that not everyone is
enamoured of the new system – myself included!
There are several reasons why I feel this way. Firstly, 60 seconds is a very short
length of time and there are usually several major points they wish to tell us
about. However talented the news presenters are, they cannot avoid sounding
rushed as they try to read everything within the time limit. Because of this speed
of delivery, you usually find that there is no time for any space between items.
The result of this is that one item follows on immediately from another and there
is no pause to indicate that one item has finished and another has begun. This
can be both confusing and slightly amusing!
Secondly, most evenings the news doesn’t change radically within an hour so the
bulletins end up repeating the same items again and again. Sometimes there is a
change in presenter in order to give the illusion of new news but in effect it is the
same bulletin as an hour ago. Why bother?
Thirdly, I consider this an intrusion into my evening’s viewing. Yes, news is
important and I choose when I wish to watch it. When I sit down to watch a film or
a soap opera, I want to relax. I do not want to be interrupted in this way. Even
now, when I should be expecting it, the bulletins still come as a surprise and I half
expect some terrible breaking news.
Maybe I am a grumpy old man but in my opinion news has a time and a place
and it’s not every hour while I’m trying to relax!

Read the text. Too young to drive?

The recent government proposals to raise the age at which people can legally
drive in the UK have been met with a variety of reactions. Here is a selection
from our website.

A . Katy (15) from Barnet

In my opinion, it’s a disgraceful idea. It’s just another example of how
young people get the blame for everything these days. Raising the age won’t
mean a reduction in accidents. What needs to be done is to introduce more
tests for older drivers. In this country you take a test to start driving and then
you’re free to carry on driving until you die! It’s often elderly people who
cause accidents because they drive so slowly and get other drivers frustrated.
Also, their reactions aren’t so quick so they can’t cope with dangerous
situations on the roads very well. At least younger drivers are alert and react
quickly.

B . Brad (22) from Essex

All things considered I think it may well be a very good idea to raise the
driving age. As far as I’m concerned, younger drivers are no worse than
older drivers but an extra year before they can drive will mean an extra
year’s maturity, which can only be a good thing. And of course, another year
will mean not so many cars on the roads which will surely benefit everyone.

C . Shirley (45) from London

My feeling is that it’s not necessarily a good idea to keep young people off
the roads for an extra year. I think it will only encourage more young people
to drive illegally. As we all know children are maturing earlier and earlier
these days so really, if anything the age for driving should come down not go
up.

D . Matt (57) from Dorchester

This move is long overdue. Had it come into force earlier a significant
number of road accidents could have been avoided. Young people enjoy
speed. It’s only natural. But many accidents are caused by young people
actually ‘racing’ each other, not on a race track but on the roads! And it’s
usually the youngsters who use their mobiles while they’re driving and get
easily distracted. I don’t want to imply that young people today are
irresponsible but in my opinion the age for driving should be as high as
possible until they learn to take driving seriously and consider the
consequences of what they do in a car. It can, after all, be a lethal weapon in
the wrong hands.

Society is one of the most important aspect of a healthy and peaceful life which is
getting degraded with this growing world. Some people believe that new
developments can only be incorporated in the society by the governments and
that individuals cannot give any contribution towards the change. In my opinion
individuals play a vital role in the change of society and this essay will discuss
what can an individual do for the change. There are many government
organizations and institutes who contributes a lot of new innovations and
developments which help to bring positive change in the society. For instance,
Green Peace organization is one of the best NGO in India who supports
underprivileged children to complete their education and get a well paying job.
This initiative is one the best change that can be brought to our society as this will
help lower the poverty rate of our nation. Even though these institutions support
the individuals, it is the sole responsibility of the person to use this opportunity for
the betterment of his own and of his society. Change in society can be brought
through various method. Even a small gesture towards a positive and peaceful
life is considered as a change. Individuals can incorporate small changes in their
daily routines, which will then sum up to be a big change. For instance, they are
many parts of the world suffering through natural calamities. In such cases,
individuals can contribute food or money to these people and help them to cope
up with their damages. People can also volunteer to teach children in schools
and to teach various activities through which illiterate people can earn money. In
conclusion, I believe individuals play a very important role in bringing change to
the society.

Mẫu 2:
In the past, a large number of changes and developments were brought about
by big organizations, governments, and institutions. These actions led many
people to believe that individuals are incapable of becoming agents of
change among society. I believe that both individuals and governments have
their own function to bring influences or changes to society. In my opinion
individuals play a vital role in the change of society and this essay will
discuss what an individual can do for the change.

There are many government organizations and institutes who contribute a lot
of new innovations and developments which help to bring positive change in
the society such as building infrastructures, supporting scientific researches
and paying the manpower. These financial inputs help tremendously in
initiating and sustaining a change or a development. Monetary contributions
are also helpful in bringing positive messages in a society. For example,
students are more keen in their academics to strive for scholarships given by
the government and large institutions. This creates a positive learning
atmosphere among pupils.
On the other hand, a revolution started by minor or poor people who were
recognized to be powerless. Individuals can incorporate small changes in
their daily routines, which will then sum up to be a big change. For instance,
there are many parts of the world suffering through natural calamities. In
such cases, individuals can contribute food or money to these people and
help them to cope up with their damages. People can also volunteer to teach
children in schools and to teach various activities through which illiterate
people can earn money. An significant example for an individual who can
make a big impact on a country in Vietnam is President Ho Chi Minh. The
lonely went out to find a way to save the country based on the ideals of Mac
Leninism and successfully liberated the Vietnamese people from the
domination of the invaders.
In conclusion, I do not think that individuals are incapable of bringing
influences and creating changes among society. I personally believe that
individuals, like governments and organizations, are also part of society.
Therefore, both individuals and governments or organizations can do
something to change society in their own role or change in society comes
from personal change. Anyone can make a big impact in society without
governments and large institutions.

Mẫu 3
When the issue of citizen’s importance comes into view, there exist conflicting opinions.
Truth be told, individuals’ role in developments has generated much discussion recently.
Some people believe that any new developments can only be brought about by
governments and large institutions. Personally, I completely disagree with the idea that
individuals can do nothing to change society for the following reasons. Some people are
inclined to work with others, thinking that only the authorities and large institutions can
bring about new developments. I don’t think this argument is valid because a large
institution is shaped by individuals, which means that without individuals, the institution
will find it difficult doing everything. The governments maybe can make a big decision,
but it is not to say that individuals don’t have any affection! Citizens who on the
government’s side also say that individuals can do nothing to change society. I disagree
with this too, as I think everyone have their own way to do that or contribute to the
country’s development. They can do charity by their own substances, including money,
clothes, necessity,... Or devote their knowledge, ideas....For example, Thomas Edison is a
scientist, inventor and a businessman who invented many devices that affected our lives.
And now, the whole world benefits from his idea. This directly suggests that individuals
also can exert an influence on developments and help to change society. I strongly believe
that individuals can incorporate small changes in their daily routines, which will then sum
up to be a big change in society. Some individual action seems quite small and did not
bring much influence, but in fact, it's maybe bring great impact on the community.
Moreover, we suppose that only large institutions can make a change but have we ever
thought about how to set up an organization? Of course, we don’t often think about it. To
form an organization or a group of people, we need a founder or a leader. That is exactly
why each individual is very important in changing society. Take Hermann Gmeiner as a
perfect example, he is the founder of the SOS children’s village which is an international
non-profit organization to help and protect the orphans, wandering and missing children.
It was founded in 1949 and now ranked 33 out of 100 non-profit organizations in the
world “for global influence”. What can be inferred from this is an individual’s action can
also have a big impact on the change and development of society. In conclusion, I would
say that nobody should underestimate each individual’s contribute or effort to change
because every major change in society comes from personal change. Anyone can make a
big impact in society without governments and large institutions.

My favorite movie of all time is Titanic. It is the best love story I have ever
watched. I watched this movie many times but I never got tired watching it.
Whenever I watch it, I always cry. The reasons I like it so much are the
grand scenery and the romantic content. The film is about the love story of
Rose Dewitt Bukater and Jack Dawson. Jack was a free-spirited poor young
man but he got a ticket for a luxurious ship, Titanic. Rose was from the
American upper class and was engaged to a man. She was reluctant to marry
him. She met Jack in Titanic and they fell deeply in love even though there
was a huge gap between them. The Titanic was headed to America from
England. However, the ship crashed into an iceberg on the way. The side of
it broke up and the ship was flooded. Not everyone could escape safely.
Many people died including Jack. Rose survived because Jack helped her to
climb on a boat. Jack sacrificed himself for Rose. Although it was only a
classical sad love story, it encompassed a large range of emotions, laughter,
rage, terror and the feeling of deep love. I was touched and especially
appreciated the love between them. They both tried to save each other. It
showed the power of love could do everything. I think the movie had
excellent content which was based on a real story. The two main actors and
actress Leonardo and Kate had an outstanding performance. Besides, the
scenery and the stage properties really amazed me. From the big ship to the
small cushions at Rose’s room, they were all delicate. Last but not least, the
great theme song “My heart will go on” by Celine Dion marked the end of
the story. Even if Jack leaves Rose forever, her heart will keep going on.
This is the best movie I have ever watched. No wonder why Titanic already
won 11 Academy Awards. I recommend that everyone should watch this
movie at least once.

Today I’d like to talk to you about Harry Potter which is one of my favorite films. It was a
fiction film written by British author J. K. Rowling, telling a story about people in the
wizarding world. The central character was Harry Potter, who used to be an orphan in the
normal world before discovering that he was a wizard. Afterwards, he went to a special school
called Howard where taught him necessary skills to succeed in the wizarding world. He also
had to deal with challenges in terms of study, friendship, love and even the fight against dark
power.
I saw the first episode of this film when I was in high school, at about grade 11. As the film
had 7 parts, and the last part was introduced just 2 years ago, I was always looking forward to
catching the latest episodes of it.
Why I decided to see the film might be because at that time, Harry Potter was recommended as
a masterpiece, making me feel curious about it. Moreover, I had read the original novel before,
and I really can’t put it down, reading it from cover to cover. So I guess the film would be as
attractive as the book.
I think the most important reason why I enjoyed this film was that it made me feel
adventurous. It was really a fantastic film.

I have just seen the film "Along with the Gods" with my wife at Buon Ma Thuot
cinema. In spite of not having a keen on tear-jerking movies, I have to admit that I
like this film so much. The film starred Cha Tae Hyun who played Kim Ja-hong.
The main character, Kim Ja-hong is a dedicated and brave firefighter.
Unfortunately, he died in the line of duty, when trying to save a little girl from a
building in fire. However, it was not the end. Accompanied by three guardians,
within 49 days after his death, he would have to pass seven trails to reincarnate.
But in the last one - the court of Filial Impiety, a grievous secret was revealed
about his mistakes in the past. Was he a true paragon? Could he fulfill his
dearest hope for seeing his mom for the last time? Generally, the plot is built in
an appealing and exhilarating way with a dramatic twist that creates an emotion
explosion at the last minute.
In each court, every part of Ja-hong’s life is opened, which delivers meaningful
messages not only about the good nature of human but also the eternal love
between the mother and her children. Honestly, the film really knows how to
touch viewers’ heart. Another factors making it a roaring success are the
contribution of well-known celebrities with excellent acting skills and fantastic
action scenes thanks to amazing visual effects.
What I didn't like about the film, is that I was lachrymose, like a woman. And it
made my wife surprised!
Really, "Along with the Gods" is one of the most impressive fantasy drama film
that I have seen recently. This film is worth to watch.
