Techniques in Selecting and Organizing Information


1. Brainstorming- writer collaborates with others to explore topics, develop ideas
Graphic Organizer- use visual symbols that expresses thoughts, ideas, knowledge and
relationship (ex. Venn diagram, fishbone, spider web)
Topic Outline- uses phrases only, no sentences and verbs
Sentence Outline- focuses on the complex issues in details

Patterns of Development
 Narration- how, when, and where an event actually happened
 Description- goes into details about a specific object, person, location
 Definition- explains what something means, is, does, used, for, looks like, etc.
 Exemplification/Classification- provides example/ divides things into groups, classes,
categories
 Compare & Contrast- organizes ideas based on how events, places are similar or
different to each other
 Cause & Effect- explains why something happens or what results a particular event
produces
 Problem-Solution- focus on either a problem or solution
 Persuasion- convinces reader to agree to an argument or claim about a topic

 Organization- the arrangement of ideas in text
 Coherence & Cohesion- the connection of ideas and between sentences/ paragraph
 Language use- the acceptable style of language for a particular form of text
 Mechanics- capitalization, punctuation, spelling, numeral, acronyms and contractions
DISCOURSE- any unit of connected speech or writing longer than a sentence
- Presentation of thought through language
