1 Scope
This standard defines the technical supply specifications for high-type formed sheet eyelets with
threads. It specifies values for geometric dimensions and defines the testing of these sheet eyelets
for use with bolts of property classes ≤ 10.9.
This standard applies to sheet eyelets made of steel with metric ISO threads as per VW 11610,
VW 11611, VW 11613, or VW 11615 and formed threads as per VW 01178.

2 Definitions

Sheet eyelet with thread

An integrated fastener, which is produced in several shaping stages from a flat sheet-metal blank
or from a sheet-metal strip by means of pre-drawing and reshaping

3 Geometric dimensions

3.1 Sheet eyelet with thread

See figure 1 and table 1.

3.2 Necessary effective length of engagement and maximum permissible tube height
To ensure a secure connection, the effective length of engagement meff. as per table 1 must be ad‐
hered to. The maximum permissible tube height h as per table 1 must be aimed for in order to
maintain packaging space, which is important for design engineering.

Table 1 – Necessary effective length of engagement and maximum permissible tube

height for bolts of property classes ≤10.9
Minimum tensile strength Rma) meff. h
[mm] [mm]
Rm < 400 MPa ≥1.5 × D ≤2.0 × D
400 MPa ≤ Rm ≤ 530 MPa ≥1.3 × D ≤1.8 × D

a) Minimum tensile strength in the initial condition (unformed condition of the sheet metal)

For fine-pitch threads, it may be necessary to increase the minimum length of engagement (see
note in table 3 of VW 01110-1).

3.3 Outer diameter of the sheet eyelet

To ensure the possibility of using a threaded insert made of wire as per DIN 8140-1 in case of re‐
pair (defective thread), the minimum outer diameter do min (analogous to d3 in DIN 7952-1) must be
selected such that the repaired thread also passes the tests of the mechanical properties listed in
section 5.

4 Design of the thread

The thread can be produced by cutting or forming (see figure 2 and figure 3).

Figure 2 – Cut thread Figure 3 – Formed thread

The quality of the thread must be documented in accordance with the tests specified in section 5
and with regard to trueness to gage.
The pilot hole diameter prior to thread manufacture must be documented by the manufacturer and
specified in case of complaint.

5 Tests

5.1 Testing force test

The testing force test as per DIN EN ISO 898-2 must be performed. The testing forces for nuts of
property class 12 apply (see table 2).

Table 2 – Testing forces

Thread Testing force
N
M5 16 300
M6 23 100
M8 42 500
M10 67 300
M12 × 1.5 105 700
M14 × 1.5 150 000
M16 × 1.5 200 400

5.2 Overload test

An overload tightening test must be performed.
The result is positive only if a fracture of the fully load-bearing-capable bolt occurs in the free
stressed thread area or in the shank. This test must be documented by recording a torque-angle of
rotation graph (called a tear-off graph). The test setup must be agreed upon with the developer and
documented.
After the test, it must be possible to screw a new bolt into the tested nut thread by hand.

5.3 Metallographic testing

5.3.1 Graphical representation of the grain orientation after shaping

Microsections are taken of sheet eyelets that have been cut through the center to detect wrinkling
in the microstructure. Wrinkling result from improper design of the individual shaping stages and
may cause component failure. The supplier must therefore prepare and supply microsections no
later than upon initial sample inspection as well as during series production in case of a change in
the shaping sequence, material batch, or tool.

5.3.2 Design of the sheet eyelet with thread

Transverse flaws in the transition radius between the eyelet and the sheet metal that interrupt the
grain course are not permissible.
Wrinkling that runs along the surface must be classified as non-critical.

5.4 Repeated assembly test

A 10x repeated assembly in the original connection, with the tightening parameters specified in
table 3 or specified separately for the individual threaded connection and a clamping length of
1 × D to 4 × D, must be performed.
The following conditions apply:
– The thread must be filled with hot wax (only if the nut is also waxed in the original connection,
e.g., AKR 335F10 or AKR 336); furthermore, possible contamination of the nut by grease, oil,
or similar materials must be considered if there is a risk that such contamination can occur in
the production process or after-sales service.
– New original bolts must be used in each case.
– The original components or alternative components, which must be approved by the appropri‐
ate department, must be fastened.

Table 3 – Tightening parameters

Thread Tightening specification
M5 6 Nm + 90°
M6 10 Nm + 90°
M8 20 Nm + 90°
M10 50 Nm + 90°
M12 × 1.5 70 Nm + 90°
M14 × 1.5 130 Nm + 90°
M16 × 1.5 180 Nm + 90°

The angle of rotation must be specified in dependence on the clamping length, as per
VW 01126-2.
The test result is positive if:
– no failure, e.g., stripping of the nut thread, deformation of the threaded plate, etc., occurs
– a new bolt can be screwed in by hand after testing is completed

6 Designation
In drawings, the sheet eyelet with thread for tolerance class 6H must be designated as follows:
Threaded eyelet VW 01045 – M12 × 1.5
If a different tolerance class is used, this must be indicated after the thread designation.
If the thread is formed as per VW 01178, the thread designation must be followed by "formed":
Threaded eyelet VW 01045 – M10 – formed
