3. Can Genetic Engineering affect in the economic aspect of a certain country? In what way/s?
4. Can you site an example of genetically modified organism?
Genetic Engineering
4.4 Abstraction
Genetic Engineering is changing the DNA in living organisms to create something new.
These organisms are called Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)

Example:
Bacteria that produce human insulin.

Genetically Modified Organisms are called transgenic organism since genes are transferred from one
organism to another.

Some genetic engineering techniques are as follows:

1. Artificial selection – breeders choose which organism to mate to produce offspring with desired traits.
 They cannot control what genes are passed.
 When they get offspring with the desired traits, they maintain them.
A. Selective breeding – when animals with desired characteristics are mated to produce offspring with those
desired traits.
 Passing of important genes to next generation.
 For example, people breed dogs for specific purposes.
 Selective breeding occurs when you choose the best male and female to bread.
 Example: Angus cows are bred to increase muscle mass so that we get more meat.
 Example: Egg-laying hen produces more eggs than the average hen.
B. Hybridization – two individuals with unlike characteristics are crossed to produce the best in both
organisms.
 Example: Luther Burbank created a disease resistant potato called the Burbank potato. He
crossed a disease resistant plant with one that had a large food producing capacity.
C. Inbreeding – breeding of organism that genetically similar to maintain desired traits.
 It keeps each breed unique from others.
 Risk: since both have the same genes, the chance that a baby will get a recessive genetic disorder
is high.
 Risks: blindness, joint deformities
 Inbreeding decreases variations.
2. Cloning – creating an organism that is an exact copy of another.
 They will have the same exact DNA as the parent.
 A single cell is removed from a parent organism.
 An entire individual is grown from that cell,
 Remember one cell has all the DNA needed to make an entire organism.
 Each cell in the body has the same DNA, but cells vary because different genes are turned on in
each cell.
 Dolly was the first mammal cloned. She had the same exact DNA as her mother and had no
father.
 Cloning is a form of asexual reproduction.
3. Gene Splicing – DNA is cut out of one organism and put into another organism.
 A trait will be transferred from one organism to another.
 For example: the human insulin gene can be removed from a human cell. It can be put into a
bacterial cell. The bacterial cell will now make human insulin.
 A restriction enzyme cuts the insulin gene out of the human DNA.
 A plasmid is removed from a bacteria and cut with a restriction enzyme.
 The human gene is placed into the bacterial plasmid
 The plasmid is placed back into the bacteria. The cell now has directions (DNA) to make insulin.
 Transformation happens when a gene from one organism is transferred to different organism.
 The organism that have DNA transferred to them are called transgenic organisms.
 Example: Spider goat – gene from spider inserted into the goat. The goat makes silk of the spider
web in their milk.
 Example Glow-in-the-dark cats – scientists used a virus to insert DNA from jellyfish. The gene
made the cat produce a fluorescent protein in its fur.
4. Gel electrophoresis: analyzing DNA – a technique used to compare DNA from two or more organisms.
 The DNA is cut into fragments with a restriction enzyme.
 The cut DNA is then put into the wells of a machine filled with gel.
 The gel is spongy and the DNA squeezes through the pores.
 The machine is plugged in and the fragments get separated based on their size.
 Recombinant DNA is when DNA is combined from at least two organisms.
Roll the Dice

Direction: A 6-sided dice, each student rolls and briefly and answers question/ phrase aloud based on the
4.5 Application number rolled:
1. Genetic engineering helps…
2. Something I learned today
3. One word to sum up what I learned
4. If you were a Scientist, what particular organism would you like to modify and why?
In a ½ sheet of paper, answer the following questions:
I.
1. What is genetic engineering?
Genetic Engineering is the process of changing the DNA in order to create something new.
2. What do you call the organisms that are products of genetic engineering?
GMO or Genetically Modified Organisms
3. What is the difference between hybridization and inbreeding?
Hybridization is when two individuals having different characteristics are being crossed while inbreeding is
4.6 Assessment when individuals of the same genetic makeup is crossed.
4. Provide at least 3 Genetically Modified Organisms.
Answers May Vary

II. Describe the process of making human insulin through a bacterial cell.

The human gene that dictates in making insulin was cut from a human cell through the use of restrictive
enzymes and is inserted to the plasmid of a bacterium therefore having the gene that will eventually dictate
the bacterial cell’s mechanism to produce human insulin.
Make a persuasive essay comprised of 500 words expressing your thoughts whether GMOs are beneficial or
harmful.
