General
Chemistry I
Quarter 1 – Module 2:
“Formulas of Common Chemical
Substances”
I. Introduction

Elements are the building materials of the substances that make up living and
nonliving things. Although there are only 118 elements, there are millions of different
compounds made from their atoms. It is important that you know the different chemical
formula that represent the composition of chemical substances.

II. Learning Competency

● Recognize the formulas of common chemical substances. (STEM_GC11MPla-b-

9)

III.Pre-Test

Write the letter of the correct answer.

1. How many atoms are in this chemical formula?
2 Ca (NO3)2
a. 3 b. 6 c. 12 d. 18
2. How many element are in 6 C6 H12 O6 ?
a. 3 b. 6 c. 18 d. 30
3. Which of the following refers to the large number written in front of a chemical
formula which gives the number of molecules?
a. Subscript b. coefficient c. exponent d. symbol
4. It refer to a number that is written below the symbol and shows how many atoms
of each element is present
a. Compound b. coefficient c. molecule d. subscript
5. Which of the following is a compound?
a. Cu b. Co c. CO d. C

Well, how was it? Don’t feel bad if your

answers are wrong. You will finally know the
correct answer after finishing this module.
IV.LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Activity 1. Do you know me?

In this activity, you should be able to:

● Recognize formulas of common substances

Engage

Think about what you call your friends. Some of your friends might have full
names (long names) and a nickname (short name). Their full name is like the substances
name and their nickname is like the substances formula. Chemical substances have
names, just like people have names. We simply used the names that we find in the
periodic table for elements and we used words to describe mixture. Can you recognize
formulas of simple substances?

Elicit

In order to make it easier to describe elements and molecules, chemical symbol

and chemical formulas are used. For example, H, represents one atom of hydrogen
and O represents one atom of oxygen. If we want to represent two atoms of hydrogen,
instead of writing H H, we write H2. The subscript “2” means that two atoms of the
element hydrogen have joined together to form a molecule.

Given the following samples of common substance, will you be able to give the correct
chemical formula?

1. water

2. Salt
3. Sugar

You got it! That is really easy! How will

you write the chemical formula of some
substances?

Explain

Answer the question below.

1. What does a chemical formula represent?

_____________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________

Elaborate

Chemical formulas express the number of atoms of each element in a

compound. The number of atoms is indicated with a subscript to the right of the
element’s symbol, unless the subscript is 1; subscript 1 is omitted for simplicity.

Some chemical formulas use parentheses to make them clear. Antifreeze is a

solution of ethylene glycol: it has a chemical formula C2H4 (OH)2. The formula is
composed of 2 atoms of carbon, 4 atoms of hydrogen and 2 units of OH. The
parenthesis emphasizes that OH is a fundamental part in the formula and so is
written in the chemical formula. The total numbers of atoms are, therefore, 2 atoms of
carbon, 6 atoms of hydrogen, and 2 atoms of oxygen.

Extend

A. Write the chemical formula for each compound:

1. The compound containing two aluminum atoms to every three oxygen
atoms.____________
2. The compound containing three oxygen atoms to every sulfur
atom.____________________
3. The compound containing four chlorine atoms to every carbon
atom.____________________
4. The compound containing one calcium atom and two chlorine atoms.
___________________
5. The compound containing two oxygen atoms to every one carbon atom.

learning module! You have just had an amazing
journey and for sure, you will have the same in the
succeeding modules.
V.Post-Test

Directions: Read and analyze each question and write the letter of the correct
answer in your science notebook.

1. How many atoms are there in HC2 H3 O2 ?

a. 3 b. 4 c. 8 d. 9
2. What is the number of H in 3 (NH4 )2 CrO4?
a. 4 b. 8 c. 24 d. 32
3. A molecular formula:
