PERINEAL CARE
- Perineum is located below the pelvic diaphragm
and between the legs.
- It is a diamond shape area that includes the
anus and the female vagina.
- During pregnancy, the perineum stretches
tremendously to allow for the mother to push
the baby out.
- During delivery, the doctor may need to make a
cut in the area between the vagina and the
anus.

Episiotomy
- Is a surgical incision to the perineum, makes an
opening of the vagina a bit wider allowing the
baby to come out through it more easily.

- Pain – provide comfort
Purposes of Perineal Care
- Assess for any irritation, excoriation,
inflammation, or swelling
- Asses for any discharges
- Assess for any odor
- Assess for pain and discomfort
- Ask client if there is any urinary and fecal
incontinence
 If there is catheter, check if it is in place
 Determine their personal hygeine practices
Proper Perineal Care
- Wash your hand
- Remove soiled pad starting to the front going to
the back
- While sitting on the toilet, pour or spray water
to the perineum so the water will move from
front to back
- Pat area with dry cotton wipes from front to
back
- Hot sitz bath for at least 20 minutes
- Application of perilight or infrared light therapy
- Provide hot sitz bath – type of therapy done by
sitting in warm, shallow water
- It helps to ssoth pain, itching and other
symptoms in genital and anal areas
- It keeps the areas clean and relaxes muscle of
the perineum
Infrared Light Therapy – perineal lamp
- Application is a method to use light to treat
acute pain.
- It relieves discomfort and restores the
episiotomy wound by penetrating heat.
- The heat radiation is very effective in wound
healing.
Perineal Care – washing and cleaning of external
genitalia including the perineum.

CHERRIES WITH BETADINE CLEANSER.

* FROM CLEANEST TO THE DIRTIEST

AREA ( 1-7-7) STROKE

* EXTENT CLEANSING UP TO THE UPPER

INNER THIGH

* RINSE THE AREA WITH NSS SOLUTION

* CLEAN THE PERINEUM USING ANTISEPTIC
