Plunger diameter for Fuel pump

At your convenience
V4-82
Information to all Owners and Operators of Concerned component
Wärtsilä RT-flex82C, RT-flex82T and W-X82 engines. Fuel pump unit, fuel pump (FOP) plunger
of all RT-flex82C, RT-flex82T and W-X82
engines.

Current situation
The fuel pump plunger diameters of early
RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines were
designed with a high supply margin. In the
meantime a new specification has been
released for new engines.

Recommendation
Decreasing the plunger diameter of the
fuel pumps to the defined diameter in
accordance with the latest Wärtsilä
specification for all engines with previous
specification is recommended.

1 Introduction

This spare parts notice informs you that Wärtsilä has introduced a new plunger
diameter specification for RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines. The specification for the
W-X82 engines is already applied from the beginning.

The capacity of a fuel pump depends on the plunger diameter. The fuel pump plunger
diameters of early RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines were designed with a very high
delivery margin, compared to the required flow for engine operation. Recalculation by
Wärtsilä confirmed that the plunger diameters can be decreased on these engines.

With the smaller plunger diameter a more even load distribution is achieved on the
supply unit components especially at low engine load operation. This change does not
have any other influence on engine performance.

All new engines produced since the introduction of the new specification are equipped
with the smaller plunger diameter. Service experience confirmed the validity of the new
specification.

3 Ordering fuel pump with new specified plunger diameter

When you order the applicable fuel pump, also mention the related new plunger
diameter (refer to Table 1).

ATTENTION:
Wärtsilä recommends using the same plunger diameter on all fuel pumps in the fuel
pump unit.
Existing spare parts (fuel pump, fuel pump plunger) on board can be used up.

During a transition period, it is possible to operate the engine with different plunger
diameters until all fuel pumps are exchanged or had overhauls. This is confirmed by
service experience on several engine types.
