Taking temperature measures the
amount of heat in the body.

under the tongue
underarm (armpit)
rectal area

TYMPANIC THERMOMETER
a device that uses
infrared ray to
measure the
temperature inside
the ear canal.

In order for the nurses to
analyze the effectiveness of
treatments based on body
temperature.

PROCEDURE
1. gather equipment clean and ready
2. introduce yourself and verify the client
3. perform handwashing
4. place thermometer either rectal, oral, or
in the axillary to measure intense body
heat.
5. take thermometer from the individual
6. document the result
PROCEDURE

4. follow manufacturer’s direction for use
5. insert tympanic thermometer in the ear canal
6. take the thermometer out of the individual’s
ear when the temperature indicator sounds
7. document the results
Importance of taking body
temperature
it detects illness and provide information of
possible symptoms
represents balance between heat production and
heat loss. and also to monitor whether or not
treatment is working
