The life cycle of an investment in an SAP system.

An investment program is a hierarchical structure for managing investments.

Appropriation request (app. req.): an idea for investment.

Planning: cost planning in the appropriation request (there may be a number of variants)
rollup/aggregation of values in the program.
Approval: as a rule, appropriation requests are subject to an approval process (involves a number of
persons); and the measure is then generated from the appropriation request with transfer of
assignments and plan values.
Budgeting: budgeting from the investment program manages the budgets that can be applied to a large
number of individual measures

AR: linking an appropriation request, an internal order, and a WBS element with an investment program
position, you can also link a maintenance order (also known as a PM order) with an investment program
position. This allows you to monitor your (corporate) maintenance costs.

Flow of values in IM

Assigned funds resulting from purchase orders, invoices, in-house activity, and so on, are collected on
the investment measures
Settle the actual values from these assigned funds periodically to receivers in management accounting
