MSDS - Mono Ethanol Amine
MSDS - Mono Ethanol Amine
Emergency Overview: DANGER!! This product and concentrated solutions are corrosive to skin,
eyes, and respiratory system and especially to mucous membranes.
Combustible liquid.
Inhalation: Harmful if inhaled. May give off gas, vapor or dust that is very irritating
or corrosive to the respiratory system. Exposure to decomposition
products may cause a health hazard. Serious effects may be delayed
following exposure.
Ingestion: Corrosive; causes chemical burns to the mouth, throat and stomach.
Skin Contact: May cause severe irritation or tissue damage depending on the length of
exposure and the type of first aid administered.
Eye Contact: Corrosive. Will cause eye burns and permanent tissue damage.
Inhalation: In case of inhalation of fumes, remove to safe area, treat for shock if
necessary and seek medical attention immediately.
Eye Contact: Flush eyes with a large amount of water for at least 15 minutes. If easy
to do, remove any contact lenses. Seek medical advice quickly.
Fire: Flashpoint: Closed cup: 92.5°C (198.5°F); Lower and upper explosive
(flammable) limits: Lower: 5.5%, Upper: 17%
Fire Extinguishing Media: Use dry chemical, CO2, water spray (fog) or foam. Do not use water jet.
Special Information: Combustible liquid. In a fire or if heated, a pressure increase will occur
and the container may burst, with the risk of a subsequent explosion.
The vapor/gas is heavier than air and will spread along the ground.
Vapors may accumulate in low or confined areas or travel a considerable
distance to a source of ignition and flash back.
Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. This material is
toxic to aquatic life. Fire water contaminated with this material must be
contained and prevented from being discharged to any waterway, sewer
or drain.
Special Precautions for Promptly isolate the scene by removing all persons from the vicinity of
Fire fighters: the incident if there is a fire. No action shall be taken involving any
personal risk or without suitable training. Move containers from fire area
if this can be done without risk. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed
containers cool.
Fire-fighters should wear appropriate protective equipment and self-
contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in
positive pressure mode.
Environmental Precautions: Avoid dispersal of spilled material and runoff and contact with soil,
waterways, drains and sewers. Inform the relevant authorities if the
product has caused environmental pollution (sewers, waterways, soil or
air). Water polluting material. May be harmful to the environment if
released in large quantities
Procedures for Cleanup: Contain and absorb with sand or vermiculite and mix well. Collect up and
remove to a safe place until disposal. Wash site of spillage thoroughly
with water. Assistance can be obtained from waste disposal companies.
Small Spill: Stop leak if without risk. Move containers from spill area.
Dilute with water and mop up if water-soluble. Alternatively, or if water-
insoluble, absorb with an inert dry material and place in an appropriate
waste disposal container. Use spark-proof tools and explosion-proof
equipment. Dispose of via a licensed waste disposal contractor.
Large Spill: Stop leak if without risk. Move containers from spill area.
Approach release from upwind. Prevent entry into sewers, water
courses, basements or confined areas. Wash spillages into an effluent
treatment plant or proceed as follows. Contain and collect spillage with
non-combustible, absorbent material e.g. sand, earth, vermiculite or
diatomaceous earth and place in container for disposal according to
local regulations (see section 13). Use spark-proof tools and explosion-
proof equipment. Dispose of via a licensed waste disposal contractor.
Contaminated absorbent material may pose the same hazard as the
spilled product.
Note: see section 1 for emergency contact information and section 13
for waste disposal.
Refer to Section 13 for disposal information and Sections 14 and 15 for reportable quantity information.
Handling: Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not take internally. Use with
adequate ventilation. Avoid generating aerosols and mists. Keep the
containers closed when not in use. Have emergency equipment (for fires,
spills, leaks, etc.) readily available.
Skin Protection: Wear chemical resistant apron, chemical splash goggles, impervious
gloves and boots. A full slicker suit is recommended if gross exposure is
possible.
Odour: Amine.
pH (10% sol): 10 - 11
Melting Point: 10 °C
Hazardous Decomposition Under normal conditions of storage and use, hazardous decomposition
Products: products should not be produced.
Conditions to Avoid: Avoid all possible sources of ignition (spark or flame). Do not pressurize,
cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind or expose containers to heat or
sources of ignition. Do not allow vapor to accumulate in low or confined
areas.
Environmental Fate: When released into the soil, this material may biodegrade to a moderate
extent and may leach into groundwater. When released into water, this
material may biodegrade to a moderate extent. This material has an
estimated bio-concentration factor (BCF) of less than 100. This material
is not expected to significantly bio accumulate. When released into the
air, this material is expected to be readily degraded by reaction with
photo chemically produced hydroxyl radicals. It is expected to have a
half-life of less than I day and this material may be removed from the
atmosphere to a moderate extent by wet deposition.
Aquatic/Terrestrial Toxicity:
Acute EC50- 2.5 mg/l Fresh water Algae: 72 hours
Acute EC50- 32.6 mg/l Crustaceans: 48 hours
Acute LC50- 2070 mg/l Fish: 96 hours
Chronic EC50- 0.85 mg/l Crustaceans: 21 days

Miscellaneous advice: Local, state, provincial, and national disposal regulations may be more or
less stringent. Consult your attorney or appropriate regulatory officials
UN Number: UN 2491
HAZARD Class: 8

found in the Section I.
Label First Aid: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Get medical attention for any breathing
difficulty. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty
of water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation
develops or persists. If swallowed, give large amounts of water to drink.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical
attention.
