Teaching Time Activities in

Preschool
Day (18)
• Teaching time is an essential and practical life skill that
everyone should learn from an early age.

• Children need to be given many opportunities to


experience it and understand it.
• Understand the concept of time
• Know what hours, minutes and seconds mean
• Can tell the time on both digital and analog clocks
Activities
( 1 ) Keep a daily routine

• Should be predictable so that children know what to expect.


• Name each part of the routine and assign a particular time to it.

9:15 is the circle time.


Our circle time is a quarter past nine.
Half past eleven is our lunch time.
We have to go back our home at 3.
( 2 ) Point out clock

Point to the clock in every hour in classroom.


It’s 9 o’ clock.
It’s 12 o’ clock.

Easier to start with the hours and leave the minutes for later.

• Will get used to hearing the times they associate with the morning, afternoon
and evening.
• Teach to say “ o’clock “ and introduce AM and PM when they are ready to
understand.
( 3 ) Showing flash card of time

Tell the time and show the cards at same time.


After showing them , can ask

What time is it ?
What time does this card show ?
Is it 6 o’clock or 7 o’clock ?
Show me where is 12 o’clock. Choose one .
( 4 ) Countdown timer

-backward counting of time


-basic mathematical counting
-concentration
-Independently complete activities for a given amount of time
-transition from one activity to another
( 5 ) Talk about time
Need to frequently hear using like these sentences …..
• 15 minutes
• Half an hour
• A quarter past
• This year, last year, next year
• Today is Friday. It’s the last day of our school week.
• Tomorrow is Saturday.
• Yesterday was Thursday.
• Rainy season is coming soon.
• Lunch time is at 12 o’ clock.
• We are at school for 5 hours everyday.
• This afternoon we are going to do yoga.
( 6 ) Visual timetable
• Create a timeline of the time of day activities occur.
• Recognize the schedule of classroom
( 7 ) Time card sorting
• Parts of the days activities
• Season
• Classify the same kinds of activities in classroom
( 8 ) Counting numbers

• 1 to 60 counting
• Special count by 5 seconds
( 9 ) Read books about time
• Books with stories that can help your child understand the concept of time.

Example;
Telling time with Big Mama Cat “What time is it, Mr. Crocodile?”
( 10 ) Draw a clock
• Show your children analogue clock.
• Tell the that between the two numbers, there are four marks, each
representing 1 minute.
• After explanation, ask your child to draw the clock on a sheet of paper or on a
round paper plate.
How do teachers handle rude behaviors and disrespectful in preschool

• Remind them
• Ask them to help them
• Show your emotions that you don’t like their manners
• Negotiate them
• Make sure to get eye contact when you are explaining
