Acknowledgment

We want to express our gratitude to our university which has provided us with an opportunity to
work for such a great cause. As we enrolled in Social Advocacy, we learned a lot and got a
deeper understanding of the social problems we faced as a society.

Moreover, as part of our academic project, we completed this project with the valuable efforts of
all our group members. We are truly grateful to Sir Kazim Usman who provided us with his
assistance and guidance throughout the semester.

We appreciate the classroom environment that encourages students to excel deeply in the pursuit
of knowledge to have a broad perspective on the subject. We hope that our report is up to the
academic standards and requirements.

About the Project

Social Advocacy, as the name suggests is to support and promote a cause or issue with the aim to
bring social change. It involves interacting with and understanding the problems of the
underprivileged. At the same time, coming up with a solution that gives long-term results to the
individual and the society.

Therefore, we studied individuals and assessed their profiles on the basis of demographics that
include age, salary bracket, family size, and working ability. We then made a list of many
business options and proceeded with the shawarma stall. This was decided as per the person’s
will, ability, and expenses.

We give this person a platform to generate a stable income. In this way, he will have an earning
that supports his finances and his family. We did a meeting with this person where we got to
know that due to inadequate resources, he could not proceed with this plan. All the details and
steps of our project are mentioned in more detail later in the report.
About the person

The Person we chose for our project was Mr. Kishore Maharaj, who lives in Qayyumabad, House
no 23, C-Area Street 8, Karachi. Currently, he is a laborer doing some stuff of paint work but
facing difficulty in feeding his family due to very low income. His Family members include both
his parents, 2 wives and 2 children. In 2019, Mr. Kishor with his brothers collected money from
savings, borrowings and planned to start a Shawarma stall and they did. They bought a
Shawarma Machine costing Rs. 170,000 but due to Covid and Inflation they didn’t have the
chance to open it because they couldn’t afford it as food prices went up including Spices,
Chicken, Packaging, Sauces, Rent etc. Moreover, the idea of starting a Shawarma stall came in
the mind of Mr. Kishor as he was working with some other individual and from where he gained
the experience of making Shawarma.

Now, they are again just hoping someone to help them so that they can start their own Shawarma
stall which they weren’t able to make due to Covid and Inflation.

Initial setup

When we started with the project, we only had the location for which the rent was an issue along
with a simple shawarma machine which belonged to Mr. Kishore. The machine had not been
used since the work stopped (during covid times). Apart from that, there were no ingredients or
any things which could have been used for shawarma selling such as wrapping paper, alumunium
foil, paper plates, disposable cutlery items as well as the basic utensils such as knives for
chopping the vegetables, dishes to be able to store things, marnation bowls, etc.
Donations gained

Inorder to collect the donations, each member spread the word of mouth asking anyone who
could come up and help in this initiative.

We collected the amount which was required for the purchase of shawarma ingredients from the
project group members. Each member in the group contributed in arranging the amount up to
their capacity. The amount required was around Rs. 40,000. So we mutually contributed,
accumulated the amount and bought ingredients out of it. Those ingredients were provided as
help to Mr. Kishore. The snapshots of amount transfers are as follows:
Items purchased

We have purchased items from Zahid General Store, Shop # 42, Empress Market Saddar,
Karachi.

The items are listed below with receipts:

Furthermore, we’ve bought 2kg Chicken at the rate of Rs.950 per kg which is not mentioned in
the receipts and some vegetables costing around total Rs.3,000.

In addition, we have given them a Rs 10,000 amount for rent of the place.

Final setup

After the arrangement of the amount we went to purchase the ingredients for shawarma and
handed them over to Mr. Kishore Maharaj. The total items were provided in such a way that he
could have a fully running business for at least up to a week and a half. During this time he
would be easily able to successfully grab the consumer attention within the surrounding areas
and be capable enough to arrange money for the next round of purchases.

The final setup of the shawarma stall looks like this

Running of the business and promotions

Within the first day of the operation, Mr. Kishore was successfully able to attain a total sales of
Rs 3000.

For the future sales, a buy one get one free offer is being applied with each purchase as a
promotional strategy as well as guaranteeing consumer attention and frequent purchases.
Moreover, since it is operational in Qayyumabad, flyers are being given off within the
surrounding areas so that familiarity with the new shawarma place can be gained.

Apart from this, we group members uploaded stories on our social media handles in order to
create awareness.
