Individuals with this disorder may also benefit from 12-step facilitation treatments offered by

various support groups, mainly Alcoholics Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the
main problem of individuals with this disorder stems from their cognitive processes, which
causes them to indulge in drinking constantly (Breuninger et al., 2020). The 12-step program’s
goal is to tackle the attitudes and emotions that negatively affect the individual and cause
substance use; by working on the latter, the individual can implement more adaptive behaviors
instead. (Breuninger et al., 2020). This 12-step program aims to help individuals attain and
maintain abstinence from alcohol while engaging in activities that will benefit others and socially
acceptable behaviors (Breuninger et al., 2020).
