SOROBAN
»
SOROBAN is the name given to the traditional Japanese abacus or
calculating frame, Which is increasingly being seen as valuable
mathematical tool for a technological age. This “Natural Calculating
Device” has unique advantage in this digital age.
Why Soroban ?
The SOROBAN‘is a tool to develop the right brain. Our brain is made
Uup of two hemispheres, the left and right, research on the brain science
reveal that the left hemisphere provides analytical ability & controls,
integral information process dealing with information concerning
shape and space
Left brain governs the right limbs and the right brain, left limbs.
Conversely the action of the limbs also has an influence on the
development of the brain.
‘The children from infancy are taught to use their right hand for
most of the work they do, like eating and working. So the right
hand is used more than the left hand throughout life and the right
brain function are not well developed
The learning of ABACUS mental arithmetic accelerates development
of brain, especially right brain
The brain of a six year old reaches the weight of 1200 gms. making up
86% of the adult brain. At this stage the child approaches the sensitive
period of thinking in their visual receptivity, actual recognition of sound and
lexibility of finger muscles. So we work children from 4 to 14 years,
ABACUS! is a boon to students, parents and teachers. This is _a simple technique taught to kids
in their early childhood. The abacus method originated in China and is more than 2000 years
old art/skill. This ancient art has survived the onslaught of time, because it is a proven
technique for the brain development.
Abacus is not an uncommon word, this concept is no
countries like China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysi
‘cepted and practiced in several
Singapore, India, USA, Russia etc.
This helps children to flair better in all areas where learning is required. This simple to learn
technique is fun for students to study, and all they need is “regular practice” of 10-15 minutes
daily for the lessons taught in class. After 3 months you can see the change in your child's
ability to calculate at math problems at faster speeds and after 9 months you will feel the
change in their over all ability of understanding in other subjects.
‘ocarneu witn LamocannBENEFITS OF LEARNING ABACUS
}> Improvement in speed and accuracy in calculation,
reading and writing
> Improvement in mental arithmetic skill,
> Numbers will not be absract my more and fear
‘of numbers goes away.
> Improvement in academic performance and leaming
process is fun.
> Enhances cofidence and changes the outlook for better.
> Academic scores improves in all subjects.
> Master fast & accurate & counting skills enhanced thinking
ability, reponse & memory power.
> Insti concentration & effective learning methods.
Develop setf confidence.
> Abacus energizes the brain and focus on complete
brain development, it also helps to remove the learning
blocks.
> When we listen to a conversation, the left Brain concentrates
‘on what is said (the content), while the Right Brain picks up
how it was said (the emotions)

Sit upright with both legs perpendicular. Inhale with broad
chest. Occupy only half of the chair while sitting. Before using
the Abacus, the Abacus must be placed vertically on left side of
the table, pencil on right side and both hands placed on thighs.
‘ocarneu witn LamocannPosition of Abacus
Abacus is to be placed exactly below the sum being solved, with
‘Unit Point" aligned straight with the sum and your nose. As you
goto another sum, move Abacus so thatit isnow under the new
sum being solved, just below the sum.

‘ocarneu witn LamocannHow to Hold Abacus
Abacus is to be placed on the table at a distance of 4 fingers from the edge of the table. Unit point of
tthe abacus should be aligned with your nose. Hold the upper and lower frames of abacus with the
thumb andlasttwo fingers of your left hand.
‘ocarneu witn LamocannHow to Hold Pencil
Allow 2.5 cms projection at the end of the pencil
Right Hand: The Pencil should run through thumb and index finger Left Hand: Hold the pencil with first
three fingers & thumb, and end of the pencilis supported by the last/ litte finger
‘ocarneu witn LamocannSNE
Place the abacus flat on the table, then tilt the frame toward you. Gravity pulls all the beads down.
At this point only the upper beads have been cleared away from the beam. Place the abacus back
‘onto the table and hold it with the left hand. Then, using the back of the right index finger, make a
‘sweeping motion from left to right between the top of the beam and the bottom of the upper beads

Always Work from Left to Right
Fundamental to good abacus technique is the rule always work from left to right. This may seem a
little odd at first but it’s extremely important. I's one of the abacus's biggest advantages. It allows
Us to solve problems with great agility and speed, in part, because numbers are added and
subtracted in exactly the same way we read and hear them,

Always use the thumb and the forefinger to slide the
beads back and forth.
Hold the peneil in other three fingers lightly.
Always use the thumb to add the one value beads and
to subtract 5 value beads.
Always use the forefinger to add the 5 value beads
and to subtract 1 value beads.
