Unit Weight (γ)

Sample Problem 1

The weight of the soil before drying is 200 grams and its dried weight
after drying is 160 grams. Sp.gr. of soil is 2.6. Volume of soil before
drying is 120 cc. Compute the following:
1. Water Content (25%)
2. Void Ratio (0.95)
3. Degree of Saturation (68.421%)
4. Bulk Unit Weight (1.667)
5. Dry Unit Weight (1.333)
6. Saturated Unit Weight (1.821)
7. Effective Unit Weight (0.821)
Sample Problem 2

The moist unit weight of a soil is 19.2 kN/cu.m. Given that Gs=2.69 and
water content is 9.8%. Determine:
1. Dry Unit Weight (17.486)
2. Void Ratio (0.508)
3. Porosity (0.337)
4. Degree of Saturation (51.93%)
Sample Problem 3

The dry density of a soil is 1750 kg/cu.m. Specific gravity of soil is 2.66.
Determine the following:
1. Moisture Content when it is saturated. (19.54%)
2. Saturated Unit weight in Kn/cu.m. (20.523)
3. Effective Unit Weight in Kn/cu.m. (10.713)
Sample Problem 4

A hand-carved sample of soft saturated clay has a volume of 100 cu.cm

and weighs 175 grams. If the oven-dry weight is found to be 120 grams.
Compute the following:
1. Water Content (45.83%)
2. Void Ratio (1.222)
3. Specefic Gravity. (2.666)
Sample Problem 5

A soil having a sp.gr of 2.74 has a moist unit weight of 20.6 kN/cu.m and
a moisture content of 16.6%
1. Compute the Void Ratio (0.522)
2. Compute the degree of saturation (87.172%)
3. Compute the weight of water in kN to be added per cu.m of soil for
100% degree of Saturation. (0.432 kn/cu.m)
