STARTING
Good morning everyone, Today we are presenting a ppt on The Poem The nightingale and the
gloworm by William Cowper.

SETTING
A nightingale cheers the village with its song and a glow-worm is found to be
nearby.

FIRST STANZA
In the first stanza the poet describes that how the nightingale had been
singing all day and cheered the inhabitants of the village in the process.
However it did not stop singing till evening. When evening fell the
nightingale began to feel the pangs of hunger. So the nightingale began
looking for food and then its suddenly its eyes fell upon a spark on the
ground, The nightingale knew at once it had sighted a glow-worm and
decided to eat it at one go. By this time the glow-worm had also become
aware of the nightingales presence and it could sense that the nightingale
was about to eat it and in an attempt to save his life he began to lecture the
nightingale.
SECOND STANZA
After hearing his speech the nightingale also agreed with the points
made by the glow-worm. As a result it let the glow-worm go and had
something else for dinner.
THIRD STANZA
Life Is short so they Should live in harmony and make most of their lives.
MESSAGE OF THE POEM:
The poet’s message is that God had created both the glow-worm and the
nightingale and endowed each with their unique ability. The God who had
taught the nightingale to sing had also taught the glow-worm to shine. This
very God had provided each of them with such special talents that they might
spread beauty and cheer in the world. This is not true that we should
discriminate people and develop stereotypes for people who we feel are
different from us.
