Lenormand and Lenormand Reader… you might never
look back!

I want to tell you all about why Lenormand is so special

and how it’s unlike any other deck you’ve seen - and I
mean really, with technical detail and all.

And I want to tell you how you can become an amazing

Lenormand Reader - yes you!

Principles
LENORMAND’S DECK

A SMALL DECK
The Lenormand deck is small with only 36 cards. That’s
why it’s called Le Petit Jeu in French, meaning “the small
deck.”

EVERYDAY SYMBOLS
Its cards have symbols that come from everyday life. That’s
why it’s so easy to connect with them.

PLAYING CARD SUITS

The cards are organized into the four playing card suits:
Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades, but because it has
only 36 cards, it does not have all the pip numbers.

CARD NUMBERS
The cards also have a number (not the pip) that orders
them sequentially, starting with card 1, the Rider, and
ending with card 36, the Cross.
36 CARDS
CARD MEANINGS

Lenormand’s card symbols come from everyday life. You

can identify people, animals, plants, and objects in the
cards. Because these symbols are readily recognizable, it’s
very easy to associate meaning to them.

Let’s try some examples. Jot down some keywords you

associate with each of these cards. Use the space under
the cards and create as much space as you need.
COMBINATIONS

The key to unlocking infinite meanings from this simple

36-card deck is to combine the cards!

What do you make of these cards when they come up

together? Jot down your thoughts after the equal sign.
Use the space under each pair and create as much space
as you need.
TABLEAU-STYLE

Because Lenormand’s cards are read in combinations,

they’re often laid out in a Tableau, which means ‘portrait’
in French.

Tableau-style means we can read many lines: Horizontal,

vertical, diagonal - and much more in the bigger spreads.

What lines can you interpret in this 4-card portrait?

TABLEAU-STYLE READING

As you discovered earlier, the key to reading a Lenormand

layout is to connect the cards into different lines - or
sentences. These lines give us details about the story told
by the cards.

Check out this simple line of three and then discover how
much more details you get by adding just two cards into a
cross.
SIMPLE LINE OF THREE

HOW TO READ A LINE OF THREE

A line of three is short but focused. It has a middle card to

anchor the line, and you can read three pairs and one
triplet to help you learn the cards and combinations.

➤ See if card 2 makes sense as the main theme or focus.

➤ Interpret the pairs 1+2 and 2+3.

➤ String both pairs together, or read the triplet 1+2+3.

➤ Answer the question.

What do you make of these different combinations? How

do they answer your question?

SIMPLE CROSS

HOW TO READ A SIMPLE CROSS

A simple cross is a line of three plus two cards. You can

read the horizontal, the vertical, and even the diamond
around the central card.

➤ Interpret card 2 as the main theme or focus.

➤ Interpret line 1+2+3.

➤ Interpret line 4+2+5.

➤ Interpret the diamond 1+4+3+5.

What do you make of these different lines? Do you think

they tell us different aspects about the story?
