This chapter introduces the following topics about the UMG8900:
z Orientation: briefs functions, services and network applications of the UMG8900.
z Key benefits: introduces main and distinct features of the UMG8900.
By reading this chapter, you can get an overview of applications and features of the
UMG8900.

1.2 Orientation
The UMG8900 is an MGW developed by Huawei Technologies, Co., Ltd (hereafter
referred as Huawei) according to the 3GPP R4 specifications. It is engaged in bearing
voice, multimedia and narrowband services (data services with bandwidth less than 64
kbit/s), and converting service stream formats of different networks.
In a wireless network, the UMG8900 is able to transport and switch voice services and
CS data services from a wireless access network to ISDN, PSTN, GSM, CDMA and
packet networks. With packet switching ability, the UMG8900 is adapted to the
evolvement of the wireless network to an all-IP network.
The UMG8900 communicates with the MSC Server through H.248 protocol. Besides
Huawei’s MSOFTX3000, it can also interact with other vendors’ MGC supporting
H.248.
The UMG8900 is oriented as:
z MGW in the UMTS R4 core network
z UMTS R99 VMSC/TMSC/GMSC together with the MSOFTX3000
z GSM VMSC/TMSC/GMSC together with the MSOFTX3000
The NGN trend is the integration of mobile and fixed networks, and the integration of
core networks is the first step. The UMG8900, through being upgraded, can work as
the gateway device in both fixed and mobile networks to provide a uniform access and
transmission platform.

1.3 Key Benefits

1.3.1 Overview of Key Benefits

within mobile networks or between mobile networks and fixed networks. It has the
following key benefits.

1.3.2 Powerful Service Processing Ability

The UMG8900, by networking with the MSOFTX3000, provides basic services,

supplementary services and intelligent services.
The UMG8900 supports:
z Basic tone services, eight AMR codec types, G.711 codec type and G.711 over IP
z Voice quality assurance mechanisms such as dynamic codec type selection, echo
cancellation, silence detection and comfortable noise generation
z Tone playing, digit collection, dynamic loading of tone files, and intelligent tones
playing
z Interworking functions (IWF) provided by the attached shared IWF (SIWF) device,
including fax, synchronous data bearer, asynchronous data bearer and so on
z Embedded signaling gateway function, which can adapt and forward signaling of
GSM access networks or PSTN to packet core networks based on M2UA/M3UA,
support access of RAN signaling based on MTP3B, adapt and forward these
signaling based on M3UA
z Dual homing functions so that the UMG8900 can switch to the slave
MSOFTX3000 in the event of the master failure

1.3.3 Networking Flexibility

The UMG8900, developed based on the soft switch architecture, is not only compatible
with TDM switching networks but also able to push TDM networks to evolve to IP
packet switching networks.
The UMG8900 interacts with the soft switch device MSOFTX3000 through H.248
protocol. They together serve as VMSC/TMSC/GMSC of the UMTS R99 core network
or VMSC/TMSC/GMSC of GSM core network

1.3.4 Packet and TDM Switch-Integrated Platform

The UMG8900 hardware platform is designed to support both TDM circuit switching
services and IP/ATM packet switching services.
Service streams and control streams are processed by different packet switching units,
where the maximum switching capability of service and control streams reach 128
Gbit/s and 256 k respectively. Either service or control data are forwarded through two
separate channels in 1 + 1 backup mode to avoid single point failure.
The packet and TDM switch-integrated platform addresses the requirements for the
TDM network and packet network as well. Therefore, the present networks can evolve

to all-IP networks smoothly through software upgrade instead of hardware replacement

so as to protect investment.

1.3.5 Abundant Interfaces

The interfaces of the UMG8900 include:

z TDM interfaces: E1/T1 and STM-1 SDH/SONET (electrical interfaces,
single-mode and multimode optical interfaces)
z ATM interfaces: STM-1 ATM (single-mode and multimode optical interfaces),
E1/T1 IMA
z IP interfaces: FE (10/100 auto-sensing Ethernet electrical interfaces), GE
(single-mode and multimode fiber interfaces), STM-1 POS (single-mode and
multimode fiber interfaces) and STM-4 POS (single-mode and multimode fiber
interfaces)
z Clock interfaces: for accessing 8 kHz line clock, 2048 kHz/2048 kbit/s Building
Integrated Timing Supply System (BITS) clock and Global Positioning System/
Global Navigation Satellite System (GPS/GLONASS) clock
z Maintenance interfaces: RS232, FE (10/100 auto-sensing Ethernet electrical
interfaces) and RS485
The UMG8900 supports small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical modules. The STM-1
SDH/SONET, STM-1 ATM and STM-1/4 POS interfaces can be configured with
different optical modules in different applications.

1.3.6 Voice Quality Assurance

In IP networks, the factors lowering voice quality include delay, jitter, packets loss and
echo.
The UMG8900 decreases delay and jitter through dynamic jitter buffer technique,
reduces packet loss rate through packet loss compensation technique, and cancels
echo through echo cancellers. Furthermore, the UMG8900 improves voice quality
through silence detection and comfortable noise generation techniques.
The UMG8900 prioritizes IP packets service streams and transports the service
streams in higher priorities first, thus improving transport reliability.
The voice quality specifications of the UMG8900 are all better than industrial standards.
For specifications, see section 5.2.5 “Voice Quality Specifications”.

1.3.7 Carrier-Class Reliability

The UMG8900 reliability is ensured through the following mechanisms or designs:

z Distributed independent clock system and modularized software and hardware.
Thus, one module failure does not affect the working of other modules.

Chapter 3 Services and Networking Applications

3.1 About This Chapter

This chapter introduces the services and networking applications supported by the
UMG8900.

3.2 Services
3.2.1 Overview of Services

The UNG8900 is engaged in processing and converting IP/ATM/TDM media stream

formats. When serving as the MSC in a core network CS domain together with the
MSOFTX3000, the UMG8900 is able to provide abundant 3G services.

3.2.2 Basic Bearer Services

Voice services include broadband and narrowband voice services. Broadband voice is
represented in adaptive multi-rate (AMR) format supporting multiple codec rates.
Narrowband voice, the traditional TDM voice, is a type of CS service. Voice services
can also be classified to ordinary telephone and emergent telephone services.
The CS domain bearer services provided by the UMG8900 include:
z G.711 voice services and AMR voice services at the rates of 12.2 kbit/s, 10.2 kbit/s,
7.95 kbit/s, 7.4 kbit/s, 6.7 kbit/s, 5.9 kbit/s, 5.15 kbit/s and 4.75 kbit/s
z Data transparent transmission at the rates of 64 kbit/s, 32 kbit/s and 28.8 k bit/s
z Non-transparent data services at the rates of 57.6 kbit/s, 28.8 kbit/s and14.4 kbit/s
z G.711 services over IP

3.2.3 Multimedia Services

As the CS domain device of a core network, the UMG8900 can provide real-time
multimedia services of the CS domain.
The UMG8900 supports codecs adaptation of multimedia services in accordance with
3G-324M, and provides mobile video services together with other devices.
The UMG8900 supports 3G-324M services over IP/TDM.

3.2.4 Intelligent Services

The UMG8900 can only provide announcement resources and service bearer channels
by itself. However, by working with intelligent devices and the MSOFTX3000, it can
provide intelligent services over the CS domain.

3.2.5 QoS Insurance

The UMG8900 focuses on provisioning real-time voice services in a UMTS network.

For voice services, some requirements on quality of service (QoS) must be satisfied.
The UMG8900 provides the following measures to insure voice quality:
z Supporting IP differentiated services (IP DiffServ), IP tag of service (IP TOS) and
differentiated services CodePoint (IP DSCP)
z Supporting priority queue of upstream data and treating services differently in
terms of handling order.

3.2.6 Mobility Support

The UMG8900 supports the modifying and handover of bearer resources to satisfy the
demands for service streams conversion and different networks interconnection.
The UMG8900 provides highly mobility by supporting IP/ATM/TDM bearer resources,
voice codecs conversion, and the modifying and handover of internal bearer channels.
The device supports the following handover:
z Inter-exchange, intra-exchange and subsequent handover for UMTS networks
z Inter-exchange, intra-exchange and subsequent handover for GSM networks
z Inter-exchange and subsequent handover from UMTS to GSM networks
z Inter-exchange and subsequent handover from GSM to UMTS networks

3.2.7 TrFO/TFO

The UMG8900 supports TransCode Free operation (TrFO) and TFO of a UMTS
network to improve voice quality.
TrFO: TransCode Free operation. It improves voice quality because no TransCoder
(TC) exists in any physical path, and codecs conversion and other TC related
operations are all unnecessary. This function is defined in 3GPP R4 specifications.
TFO: TransCode Free operation. It is configured for the TCs both supporting TFO. If the
codec types of two TCs are matched, this function enables in-band negotiation about
codec selection instead of codecs conversion, thus improving voice quality. This
function is defined in 3GPP R99 and GSM specifications.

3.2.8 Embedded Signaling Gateway Function

The UMG8900 is embedded with signaling gateway functions so that it supports

signaling adaptation and forward of UMTS access networks and external PSTN.
For the RANAP signaling, the UMG8900 accesses it from UMTS networks through
RANAP, SCCP, MTP-3b, SAAL and ATM protocols, and forwards it to the
MOSFTX3000 through RANAP, SCCP, M3UA, SCTP and IP.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

3-2
Technical Manual - System Description Chapter 3 Services and Networking
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Applications

For the SS7 signaling from PSTN, the UMG8900 accesses it through SS7, MTP3 and
MTP2, and forwards it to the MSOFTX3000 through SS7, M3UA and SCTP.

3.2.9 Other Services

The UMG8900 is designed in bearer independent call control (BICC) structure as

defined in R4 specifications. Together with the MSOFTX3000, the UMG8900 can
deliver 3G services such as multiparty service (MPTY), and those developed by
operators or the third party.

3.3 Networking Applications

3.3.1 Overview of Networking Applications

The UMG8900 must be integrated with a (G)MSC Server in order to implement

(G)MSC functions of a mobile core network. With the BICC structure, the UMG8900
supports flexible networking modes and can interconnect with existing networks.
The UMG8900 supports the following networking applications:
z Serving as the (G)MSC with a (G)MSC Server in a GSM core network
z Serving as the bearer equipment and networking with a (G)MSC Server in a
UMTS R99 network
z Serving as the bearer device in a UMTS R4 network
The next sections describe the networking modes listed above. The MSOFTX3000
developed by Huawei is selected as (G)MSC Server.

3.3.2 GSM Networking

In the present mobile networks, the GSM network is mainly responsible for voice
services provision. To realize smooth network upgrade without affecting the current
network development, the UMG8900, networking with the MSOFTX3000, provides
(G)MSC functions of the GSM network, as shown in Figure 3-1.

HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Applications

In this networking mode, the combination of the UMG8900 and the MSOFTX300,
viewed from the outside angle, functions as one device and provides external
interfaces. Within the core network, they are connected by internal interfaces or
standard Mc interfaces.
In a GSM network, TDM connections exist between MSC devices in the core network,
between the MSC of the core network and the BSC of the access network, and
between the access network and PSTN.
In the case of the UMG8900 and MSOFTX300 serving as a gateway exchange, the
UMG8900 accesses voice streams from external networks such as PSTN through
TDM interfaces. For signaling, it is sent to the MSOFTX3000 by an independent
signaling gateway, though direct connections to the MSOFTX3000 or by the signaling
gateway built in the UMG8900. The following provides details on voice services and
signaling interaction:
z For the voice streams from an access network, the UMG8900 forwards them to
the core network in TDM mode. For the voice streams in a core network, they can
be transmitted between devices within the core network through the existing TDM
network or Voice over IP (VoIP) functions of the UMG8900.
z The BSSAP call control signaling from the access network can be sent to the
MSOFTX3000 directly through the connections to the MSOFTX3000, or be
forwarded to the MSOFTX3000 through the signaling gateway function built in the
UMG8900 or through the TDM semi-permanent connections of the UMG8900.
z The signaling between MSC devices in the core network is exchanged based on
ISUP or TUP, over TDM links between MSOFTX3000s, through the signaling
gateway function built in the UMG8900 or over the TDM semi-permanent
connections of the UMG8900.
The UMG8900 provides all signaling gateway functions, by which the UMG8900 can
transfer the signaling from the access network and SS7 signaling from PSTN based on
M2UA and M3UA to the MSOFTX3000.

3.3.3 UMTS R99 Networking

After GSM mobile networks evolves to UMTS R99 networks, the connection modes
and service types in an access network change a lot, but in core networks the
combination of the UMG8900 and the MSOFTX3000 is still used in the CS domain
serving as (G)MSC, as shown in Figure 3-2.

In UMTS R99 networks, the access and core networks are connected by ATM
connections through lu interfaces. The user plane (UP) transmits voice and
narrowband data based on lu UP, and the control plane (CP) transmits call control
messages based on lu CP. TDM connections exist between MSC devices in the core
network, and between the core network and PSTN.
The UMG8900 and MSOFTX3000 function as one (G)MSC in the core network. The
UMG8900 can communicate with the MSOFTX3000 either through internal interfaces
or through standard H.248 messages.
In this networking mode, the UMG8900 accesses service flows through Iu interfaces.
The control signaling from an access network can reach the MSOFTX3000 directly or
be forwarded to the MSOFTX3000 through the signaling gateway function built in the
UMG8900.
Between MSC devices in the core network or between the core network GMSC and
PSTN, voice services are accessed by the UMG8900, and signaling is transferred to
the MSOFTX3000 by the UMG8900 embedded signaling gateway or semi-permanent
connections.
For the signaling of the access network, the UMG8900 adapts it based on MTP3B and
M3UA. For the signaling between MSC devices or between the core network and
PSTN, the UMG8900 adapts it based on M2UA and M3UA.
As the UMG8900 is designed in BICC structure and supports TDM/IP/ATM bearer
modes, it can help the UMTS R99 network evolve into a UMTS R4/R5/R6 network
smoothly.

3.3.4 UMTS R4 Networking

A UMTS R4 network is designed in the BICC structure so that new services can be
easily applied. The core network adopts packet bearer mode, which occupies less
bandwidth. Figure 3-3 shows a UMTS R4 network.

Compared with the UMTS R99 network, the UMTS R4 network has the same access
network, but different core network. The core network of the UMTS R4 employs packet
connections to connect MWG and (G)MSC Server, MGW and MGW through standard
Mc and Nb interfaces.
As the MGW in the UMTS R4 core network, the UMG8900 is responsible for service
bearer and bearer control of the CS domain.
The UMG8900 can also be applied to GMSC where it acts as a 3G gateway exchange
equipment to connect PSTN. Between the UMG8900 and the PSTN are connected in
TDM mode. The signaling proceeding between them is implemented either by the
signaling gateway embedded in the UMG8900 or an independent signaling gateway.

central management on all devices in the network. The iManager M2000 consists of
one iManager M2000 server and multiple iManager M2000 work stations.

4.2.2 LMT Management System

With graphic user interfaces (GUI), the LMT offers the following functions:
z Device configuration and management
z Service maintenance
z Performance statistics
z Service tracing
z Security management
z Troubleshooting.
The LMT and the BAM of the OMU are connected in a standard client/server structure.
The BAM supports device management and provides external interfaces for
management. Because the BAM applies the industry-popular real-time and distribution
operation system, the service processing capability and response speed are greatly
improved.
The BAM connects and manages other functional units through the FAM.
The LMT provides friendly GUI and abundant online help information. At the LMT, you
can get information about command functions and parameter meaning any time, as
well as alarm meaning, handling suggestions and so on.
The LMT can manage multiple UMG8900 devices simultaneously. It provides external
alarm boxes to report alarms with voice and optical signals. It can also send short
messages to notify alarm information to maintenance technicians
To insure reliable connection between the LMT and the UMG8900, a dual planes
design is used, as shown in Figure 4-2.

The master and slave OMUs of the UMG8900 are both connected to the LAN Switch
through standard cables. The LMT system communicates with the UMG8900 host also
through the LAN Switch.
During communication, only the master OMU functions. When the master board fails,
the slave OMU becomes active and connects to the LMT. The master and slave OMUs
provide only one operation and maintenance center (OMC) interface for the outside.

Note:
The back NET accommodates the OMC interface so as to meet the requirement for
back cabling.

4.2.3 iManager M2000 System

The iManager M2000, a part of Huawei’s iManager integrated network management

system positioned for wireless networks, is dedicated in managing all devices in a
mobile network.
The LMT can be integrated into the iManager M2000 to implement uniform
management on all UMG8900s in the network by fulfilling the iManager M2000
topology management functions.
The iManager M2000 communicates with the UMG8900 host based on TCP/IP.
The iManager M2000 makes it easy for alarm handling, routine operation, performance
management and information query in a centralized way.
The iManager M2000 system includes a server and one or more clients. The LMT is
loosely coupled with the iManager M2000. The LMT is dedicated to management on
the UMG8900 only while the iManager M2000 is on all devices such as topology
management and troubleshooting for the entire network.

4.2.4 MML Command Line

The system provides not only GUI but also MML commands for device operation and
maintenance. The MML commands can be used for data configuration, routine
operation and device maintenance.
MML is an interactive interface between machine and man, which is based on ITU
Z.301-Z.341 series. MML provides a set of commands to operate and query the
UMG8900. Using the MML commands, you can monitor and manage the UMG8900 in
all respects.
MML has the following features:

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-3
Technical Manual - System Description
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 OAM System

z Encapsulation: A function instead of a simple operation is encapsulated to an

MML command. For example, adding an IP address needs several steps, but can
be completed by an MML command which groups those steps. This feature
inevitably improves efficiency.
z Consistency check: When an MML command is run, data consistency between
tables is checked to prevent rubbish data.
z Base API: MML commands function as the lower layer application program
interface (API) with all other applications running based on it. The GUI terminal
translates interface operations into commands and then transmits them to the
MML system. The MML system runs the command and returns results in text,
which are transformed to another format suitable for display in GUI. In this way,
the system stability is ensured as the system running will not be affected by
program problem.
z Interactive: The input and output of MML system are based on pure character
string. This feature enables the host to interwork with Telnet alike, and the client
terminal to run on multiple platforms (such as the dumb terminal without
processing capability). Therefore, MML meets the requirement of central network
management and the tendency of telecommunication products.
With the MML system, you can select and re-run a history command and invoke a
command by inputting key words.
The MML system provides parameter range when you input a command, and
draw-down combo boxes or check lists for your selection convenience.

4.3 OAM System Functions

4.3.1 Overview of OAM System Functions

The UMG8900 provides GUI for fulfilling OAM functions. OAM functions include device
management, data management, alarm management, tracing management,
performance management, and environment and power supply monitoring.

4.3.2 Device Management

In the graphical interface, you can view device configurations, board cascading
situation, board status and power distribution status. Through right-mouse menu
operations, you can query, display, switch, reset, isolate, block and activate boards and
interfaces.
Though the graphical interface and MML commands, you can implement efficient
management and maintenance on hardware, system resources, signaling links, clock
system and physical interfaces of the UMG8900.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-4
Technical Manual - System Description
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 OAM System

4.3.3 Data Management

The function is to manage all data of the UMG8900 such as configuration data and
operating data.
The configuring data include service configuration and local exchange configuration
data. You can save, dump, and restore these data for later system upgrade and
maintenance use.
During the system running, such data are generated as alarms, logs, performance
statistics and tracing results. The system dumps and backs up them in real time for fault

HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Installation

Chapter 6 Installation

Before delivery, the integrated device assembly is completed and internal cables are
already distributed. On the site the installer needs to fix the cabinet, install boards and
distribute external cables.
The cabinet can be placed on cement floor or anti-static floor. In the latter case, a rack
and a guide rail are needed.
All cables are led out from the rear of the cabinet and boards are hot swappable for the
convenience of expansion and board replacement. To make cable distribution easy, the
interfaces connecting external cables (such as power cables, transmission cables and
signal cables) are located at the cabinet top or bottom and marked with interface
silkscreens.
Bottom-layer software including the operating system and database software is already
loaded to the UMG8900 before delivery. Therefore, the device can operate after
hardware installation, loading of BAM applications and export of configuration data.
Such simple and convenient software and hardware installation largely shorten the
period before putting the device into use.
