Nozzles
At this writing, the series 65 and 95 retainers are dimensionally identical in size to Smith Tool’s
65 and 95. The ReedHycalog retainers have carbide castellations, the Smith Tool retainers are
only steel. The steel retainers will erode and possibly disassemble if used in ReedHycalog
products.
ReedHycalog’s threaded ports provide the customer with increased hydraulic flexibility by
allowing ports to be opened or plugged in the field. Bits which include this feature are shipped
with the plugs installed in the ports by the factory. Plug Removal: There are two plugs in each
threaded port. To open the ports, simply use the provided hex wrench to remove the plugs.
Once a bit has been run with the ports open, ReedHycalog does not recommend reinstalling the
plugs as the thread integrity cannot be assured. Plug Installation: Since plugs are installed when
the bit is shipped, they will not normally be installed in the field. When this does become
necessary, plugs should be installed by the ReedHycalog service engineer. To plug the threaded
ports, inspect and clean the threads using the same method as nozzles. Remember that plugs are
sized specifically for the given port size. Fit the first plug and tighten using the provided hex
wrench with normal hand strength. Install a clean O-ring. This should be the same O-ring
provided with the bit to ensure proper fit. (If the O-ring is not available, use the O-ring sizes
below. Note the correct O-ring placement). Thread and tighten a second plug on top of the first.
Under normal situations, no lubricants or thread locking compounds are necessary.
