MFT- III

Apparel Internship Guidelines


Objectives

The objectives of internship is firstly to gain practical exposure and secondly application of knowledge in real life studies and/or assignments.

Selection of Organization for Internship

The organization should be engaged in manufacturing of sewn products (apparel or non-apparel) anywhere in the world. In case the organization
is not engaged in manufacturing themselves, the organization will ensure that the internees spend some weeks in a sewn products (apparel or
non-apparel) manufacturing set up to complete the mandatory studies detailed below.

What are the students supposed to do?

The students are supposed to study manufacturing process thoroughly, observe & execute different department functions and execute small
projects/assignments as per organizational need.

The internees are supposed to adhere to the schedule as advised by the institute. The internees must complete minimum six of the following
studies (Annexure I) during the course of internship. Each internee should complete minimum 03 studies from major and minimum 02 studies
from deepening specialization (DS). Balance one study can be either from major or from DS area.

Deliverables

While the students learn by doing themselves they contribute in organizational goal by studying, analyzing and documenting various facts and
figures which can be used as base document by an organization for various exploratory projects as well as day to day organizational activities like
capacity planning, bottleneck management, production scheduling, software requirement analysis etc. The internship document prepared by
the student gives any organization an introspective (retrospective) from a non-institutionalized person.
Annexure –I

The internees may complete following studies during the course of internship.

Description

Major

Conduct capacity study for spreading & cutting activities. Each student must record and upload spreading & cutting parameters in of two different lays of
two different style in CMS.

Study one sewing line for 30 working days to calculate total off standard time%, performance%, Utilization% and Excess cost% as per the table in the
guidelines enclosed (measuring_efficiency.pdf).

Each student must record and upload Merchandise Quality Record of one style in CMS.

Understanding and documenting the software availability in the organization (guidelines and appendix enclosed- Appendix VIII & Instructions _Appendix
VIII.pdf).

Understanding and documenting cost of manufacturing of any two products. (Should include all direct and indirect cost parameters). (guideline enclosed
factory_cost.xls)

Job Evaluation of at least 4 blue collar jobs (guidelines enclosed job evaluation.xls)

DS-Smart Garment

Fit analysis The Internee is required to observe the fit related problem in minimum two garments. He / she is required to see what changes the pattern
master is doing in the pattern to correct the defects. This entire process has to be visually documented. (format enclosed annexure for the fit.xls)
Each student should explore potential application of technical textile (and the specific category) in the organization either as expansion of product range or
as PPE.

Each student should complete 3D virtual simulation of a sample and comparative analysis with the physical sample

The student should identify two conventional sewn operations in any merchandise and how stitchless or hybrid seam will either solve a problem or
enhance/augment performance/look.

DS-Operational Excellence

Understanding and documenting the factory layout (plan view of cutting, sewing, finishing departments with all utilities)

Ergonomic Assessment. Each student must record and upload ergonomic parameters of minimum two manufacturing tasks/activities being performed in
the factory in CMS as per online format.

Operation breakdown and Time & Motion study for sewing operations for at least one complete style per internee, [applicable for factories working on
assembly line sewing system]

Conduct work Sampling Study either in sewing. Each student must record and upload the work sampling data in CMS as per guidelines. (enclosed
