Course: Engineering Data Analysis

Topic: Discrete Probability Distribution – Binomial Distribution

1. The Statistical Bulletin published by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. reported that 2% of
all American births result in twins. If a random sample of 8000 births is taken, find the
mean, variance, and standard deviation of the number of births that would result in
twins.
Ans: n = 8000; p = 0.02; q = 0.98

µ = np σ² = µq σ = √ σ²
µ = (8000) (0.02) σ² = (160) (0.98) σ = √156.8
µ = 160 σ² = 156.8 σ = 12.5219

2. A coin is tossed 4 times. Find the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the number
of heads that will be obtained.
Ans: n = 4; p = 0.5; q = 0.5

µ = np σ² = µq σ = √ σ²
µ = (4) (0.5) σ² = (2) (0.5) σ = √1
µ=2 σ² = 1 σ=1

3. A survey from Teenage Research Unlimited (Northbrook, Illinois) found that 30% of
teenage consumers receive their spending money from part-time jobs. If 5 teenagers are
selected at random, find the probability that:
a. At least 3 of them will have part-time jobs.
b. Exactly 2 of them will have part-time jobs.
c. At least 1 of them will have part-time jobs.
Ans: x = 3, 2, 1; n = 5; p = 0.3; q = 0.7

a. 1 - P(x≥3) = 1 – 0.8369 = 0.1631/ 16.31% will have part-time jobs.

b. P(x=2) = 0.8369/ 83.69% will have part-time jobs.
c. 1 - P(x≥1) = 1 – 0.1681 = 0.8319/ 83.19% will have part-time jobs.
4. A report from the Secretary of Health and Human Services stated that 70% of
singlevehicle traffic fatalities that occur at night on weekends involve an intoxicated
driver. If a sample of 15 single-vehicle traffic fatalities that occur at night on the weekend
is selected, find the probability that:
a. Exactly 12 involve a driver who is intoxicated.
b. More than 10 involve a driver who is intoxicated.
c. At least 3 involve a driver who is intoxicated.
Ans: x = 12, 10, 3; n = 15; p = 0.7; q = 0.3

a. P(x=12) = 0.8732/ 87.32 % fatalities will occur at night involving a driver who is
intoxicated.
b. 1-P(x≥10) = 1- 0.2784 = 0.7216/ 72.16% fatalities will occur at night involving a
driver who is intoxicated.
c. 1-P(x≥3) = 1 – 0.000008719 = 0.9999/ 99.99% fatalities will occur at night
involving a driver who is intoxicated.

5. R. H. Bruskin Associates Market Research found that 40% of Americans do not think
that having a college education is important to succeed in the business world. If a
random sample of five Americans is selected, find these probabilities.
a. Exactly 2 people will agree with that statement.
b. At most 3 people will agree with that statement.
c. At least 2 people will agree with that statement.
d. Fewer than 3 people will agree with that statement.
Ans: x = 2, 3, 2, 3; n = 5; p = 0.4; q = 0.6

a. P(x=2) = 0.6826/ 68.26% will agree with the statement.

b. P(x≤3) = 0.9129/ 91.29% will agree with the statement.
c. 1-P(x≥2) = 1-0.33696 = 0.6630/ 66.30% will agree with the statement.
d. P(x≤3) = 0.9129/ 91.29% will agree with the statement.
