The Nile Crocodile
This crocodile is the biggest freshwater predator in Africa.

The Nile Crocodile is a cold-blooded reptile that uses the sun to


warm up.
They are fast over
short distances on land.

They have many,


very sharp teeth.
They are dangerous reptiles and should not be approached.
How Long Do They Live For?
We can not be 100 percent sure about crocodiles that live in the wild, but
crocodiles living in captivity give us some idea about how long they live.

They may
live up to
100 years.

How Big Can They Grow?
The Nile Crocodile adult can Nile crocodile males can
weigh between 220 – 550 kg. grow to 4,2 m long and
females to 2,4 – 3,8 m long.
What Is Their Habitat?
They live throughout Southern Africa, in the Nile Basin
and in Madagascar.

They are found in rivers, freshwater marshes,


and mangrove swamps.
Diet
Nile crocodiles eat mainly fish, but it will attack almost anything,
including zebras, small hippos, porcupines, birds, and other crocodiles.
Reproduction
Female Nile Crocodiles will dig a hole in a sandy riverbank, and lay up
to twelve eggs. The female and the male guard the nest during the
incubation period, which lasts for about two to three months. After the
eggs hatch they stay close to their mothers for a few years so that she
can protect them.
