Lab4 – Controller-Managed Access Points Using

Wireless LAN Controller (WLC)
Objectives
Get familiar with WLC and control and secure Wireless devices.

Required Resources
 Packet Tracer 7.1 or higher
 WLC
 4 Light Weight Access Point (Generic)
 Cisco Switch 2960
 Wireless Tablet
 3 Smart Devices
 Server

Fig.1 Network Topology

Task A: Network Topology

Refer to Figure 1; and apply the following:
1. Connect the devices
2. Power on all the Light Weight Access Points
3. Change the name for all the devices

Task B: Server Configuration

1. Apply the following settings ( use the default settings if there is no
instructions)
Server IP Address (Static) 10.10.10.3 /24
Pool Name serverPool
Default Gateway 10.10.10.1
DNS Server 10.10.10.2
DHCP Service (Enabled) Start IP Address 10.10.10.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Max. No. of Users 100
WLC address 10.10.10.5

Task C: WLC Configuration

1. Apply the following settings at Management (use the default settings if

there is no instructions)

IP Address 10.10.10.5 /24

Default Gateway 10.10.10.1
DNS Server 10.10.10.2

2. Create 2 WLANs and apply the following settings at Wireless LANs (use
the default settings if there is no instructions)

Name: StudentNet Name: StaffNet

SSID: student SSID: staff
Authentication: WPA-PSK Authentication: WPA-PSK
PSK Pass Phrase: cisco123 PSK Pass Phrase: 1234test
Encryption: AES Encryption: AES

3. Create New 2 AP Groups and apply the following settings at AP Groups

(use the default settings if there is no instructions)

Group Name: StudentAP Group Name: StaffAP

Select : student SSID Select : staff SSID
Select : LWAP1, LWAP3 & LWAP4 Select : LWAP2

Task D: Connect wireless clients.

1. Apply the suitable settings to connect the wireless devices as described
below:
Device Name Desired Access Point
Tablet staff
Smartphones student

2. Click on Fast Forward Time, then what are your comments:

On Clicking the fast-forward times, the connections would be connected
properly and a green signal on each wire will show up which means that the
devices be connected right to each other.

Task E: Testing and Verification

1. Switch off Smartphone1 and move it close to LWAP4, then switch it on;
what did you notice?

Upon switching on the smartphone1, I noticed that it started scanning for the
nearby Wi-Fi available in its range. If LWAP4 is in its range, then it will connect
to that network. Otherwise, it will scan for other networks and would connect
to that one.

2. Apply the same for different Smartphones.

Task F: Discussion Question

Discuss Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) features. Please Elaborate

more.
Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) acts as a centralized network device which helps
in controlling multiple access points in a wireless network.
There are several features of WLC which are mentioned as follows-
1. Better Wireless Performance- Its duty is to reduce interference, find the best
channels for communication and many more.
2. Network Monitoring and problem-solving- The WLC keeps an eye on the
network and helps in troubleshooting any issues that may arise. It also
provides reports and analytics to understand how the network is performing,
identify problems and many more.
3. Organized Networks- The WLC helps divide the wireless network into
smaller groups called VLANs. This makes it easier to manage and control
different groups of users or devices.

Conclusion:

In this lab, I have learnt about network topology and various configuration
tasks.

The network consists of several devices which include a server, WLC (Wireless
LAN Controller), four Lightweight Access Points(LWAP1, LWAP2, LWAP3 and
LWAP4), cisco switch 2960, a wireless tablet and three smartphones.

From this configuration, I can infer that the network is designed to support
two separate wireless networks (student and staff). Overall this configuration
allows for the management, control and security of the wireless network
trough the wireless LAN controller, enabling separate connectivity for
students and staff members.
