Getting Started with PowerPoint:


Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the wonderful tool to create, design, and share versatile
presentations. In this section you will explore the capabilities of PowerPoint and learn the
tools to develop the professional presentations.

Navigate the PowerPoint Environment:

Scroll Bar

Thumbnails
Pane

Notes Pane

Status Bar View Shortcuts Zoom Slider

Title bar: Displays the name of the current presentation.


Ribbon: The Ribbon and its tabs contain options to execute commands.
Quick Access Toolbar: Includes common commands such as Save and Undo.

Display Options: Contains, Show/Hide, Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons
File tab: It contains file management commands.

Slide Pane: Shows a large view of the selected slide. Where you select objects and make
edits.
Thumbnails Pane: Shows thumbnails of all the slides, numbered in the order they'll
appear.
Notes Pane: Contains text that you can use to remember what to talk about on each slide.
Status bar: Displays information about your presentation.
View shortcuts: Quickly switches between the available view options.
Zoom slider: Click and drag to zoom in or out of a slide. You can also use the + and –
buttons.
Scroll Bar: You can navigate your presentation using Scrolls Bar.

Create and Save a PowerPoint Presentation:


There are multiple options available to create a PowerPoint presentation.

a) Create a blank presentation that contains only title slide, you can add slides and slide
content, and then format the presentation.
b) Import a list of slide titles from a text document, add slide content and a title slide, and
then format the presentation.
c) Import slide content and titles from a Microsoft Word file, add a title slide, and then
format the presentation.
d) Local or online template can also be used to create a preformatted or prepopulated
presentation.

Create a Blank Presentation:
1. Click the File tab.

2. Select New.

3. Click Blank Presentation.

Shortcut: Press Ctrl + N to open a new blank presentation.

Create a Presentation from a Template:


1. Click the File tab.

2. Select New.

3. (Optional) Select a Suggested Search and Category.

4. Select a template.
5. Click Create.

The presentation is downloaded and opens in PowerPoint. Now all you need to do is fill in
the placeholders

Save a Presentation:
1. Click the File tab.

2. Select Save or Save As.

• Save: will save the current presentation with the same name in the same location, and
you’re done.

Shortcut: Press Ctrl + S or, click the Save button on the Quick Access Toolbar. Do this
often so you don’t lose your hard work.

• Save As: will save the presentation as a new file, and you can choose where to save it and
give it a new name. All while the original presentation remains unchanged.

If you chose Save As, select the location where you want to save the file.

If you want to change the presentation's name, you can do that here.

3. Click Save.

Common Short Keys:

<Ctrl> + <O> Opens a presentation.


<Ctrl> + <N> Creates a new presentation.
<Ctrl> + <S> Saves the current presentation.
<Ctrl> + <P> Prints the presentation.
<Ctrl> + <B> Toggles bold font formatting.
<Ctrl> + <I> Toggles italic font formatting.
<Ctrl> + <C> Copies the selected text or object.
<Ctrl> + <X> Cuts the selected text or object.
<Ctrl> + <V> Pastes the selected text or object.
<Ctrl> + <Home> Moves to the first slide in the presentation.
<Ctrl> + <End> Moves to the last slide in the presentation.
