A magazine article is a non-fiction piece that can be read independently in

a certain publication. They usually have easy-to-read and simple-to-


understand language, as it is written for a large audience. They are written
about a wide variety of subjects, depending on the publication of the
magazine, and do not include a lot of technical details. Magazine articles
have striking titles, that tell readers what it is about. The most important
and eye-catching information is displayed at the beginning of the article
and the end usually consists of minor details.
A letter is a form of non-fiction writing, used for communication between
two parties. They are often sent in an envelope using postal services.
Formal letters are written for official or professional communication, while
informal letters are used for casual or personal communication. Formal
letters follow strict and proper diction with sophisticated language.
Informal letters use simple diction, with relaxed, conversational language.
Letters always start with ‘Dear’, followed by addressing the recipient, and
end with a closing such as ‘Yours sincerely’ followed by the sender’s
name.
A speech is a formal talk delivered to an audience. Speeches are given to
inform, persuade or entertain. They can discuss various topics depending
on their purpose. Speeches directly address their audience and make use
of 1st and 2nd person pronouns such as ‘you’ and ‘we’. They can include
rhetorical questions, concrete points, facts, opinions, repetition
(especially in threes), irony, hyperbole, emotive language, anecdotes, etc.
Many speeches also put forth an opposing point and refute it using
evidence. Speeches are organized into 3 main paragraphs: introduction,
body and conclusion.
An interview is a structured one-on-one conversation, where one party
asks questions and the other provides appropriate answers. Interviewers
ask short, broad questions that are answered in detail using long,
descriptive responses by the interviewees. Interviews are used to give
information and detail to the public, create interest and build awareness.
Interviews often inspire and motivate others, if the interviewee is a role
model, the topic addressed is provoking, etc. Interviews are typically
semi-formal and require a formal register.
