ASSIGNMENT SHEET – UNIT- 1 (CO-1)

TurboMachinery (ME-603)

Q.1. How to classify the turbomachines.

Q.2. Explain the first law of thermodynamics applicable to turbomachines.

Q.3. Explain the moment of momentum equation.

Q.4. Derive the general expression for degree of reaction.

Q.5. A lawn sprinkler with two nozzle of diameter 4 mm each is connected across a tap of water.
The nozzles are at distance of 30 cm and 20 cm from the centre of the tap. The rate of flow of
water through tap is 120 centimeter cubic per second. The nozzle discharge water in the
downward direction.

(1) What is the angular speed when sprinkler rotate freely?

(2) What torque must be applied to hold the rotor stationary?
ASSIGNMENT SHEET – UNIT- 2 (CO-2)

TurboMachinery (ME-603)

Q.1. Explain the velocity and pressure compounding with variation of pressure and velocity?

Q.2. Steam with absolute velocity of 300 m/s is supplied through a nozzle to a single stage
impulse turbine. The nozzle angle is 25 degree. The mean diameter of blade rotor is 1 meter and
it has a speed of 2000 rpm.Find suitable blade angles for zero axial thrust when the blade
velocity coefficient is 0.9 and the steam flow rate is 10 kg/s.Calculate the power developed.

Q.3.What is governing of steam turbines.

Q.4. A reaction turbine runs at 3000 rpm and the steam consumption is 20,000 kg/hr.The
pressure of the steam at certain pair is 2 bar, its dryness fraction is 0.93 and power developed by
the pair is 50 kW.The discharging blade angle is 20 degree for both the fixed and moving blades
and the axial velocity of flow is 0.72 times the blade velocity. Find the drum diameter and the
blade height. Take the tip leakage of steam as 8 %.Neglect blade thickness. At 2 bar specific
volume of steam is 0.8857 meter cubic per sec.

Q.5.The first stage of a turbine is a two row velocity compounded impulse wheel. The steam
velocity at inlet is 600 m/s and the mean blade velocity is 120 m/s.The nozzle angle is 16 0 and
the exit angles for the first row of moving blade, the fixed blade and the second row of moving
blade are 180,210 and 35 0 respectively.
(i) Calculate for each row of moving blades, the driving force and axial thrust on the wheel for a
mass flow of 1 kg/sec.
(ii) Calculate diagram efficiency and power developed.

TurboMachinery (ME-603)

Q.1. Explain the various efficiencies related to centrifugal pump.

Q.2. Explain the phenomena of Cavitations.

Q.3. A Kaplan turbine has a runner diameter of 4m and hub diameter of 1.2 m the discharge
through the turbine is 70 m3/s.The hydraulic and mechanical efficiency can be assumed to be 90
% and 93 % respectively. Assume there is no whirl at outlet. Estimate the net available head on
the turbine and power developed. If speed ration is 2.Estimate the specific speed.

Q.4. The diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 30 cm and 60 cm
respectively. The velocity of flow at outlet is 2 m/s and the vanes are set at an angle of 45 degree
at the outlet. Determine the minimum starting speed of the pump if its manometric efficiency is
70 %.
