Since we now know that people tend to scan through pages, we also know that a website should
have a visual hierarchy to guide the user to what he is searching for. With a good visual
hierarchy, the user can get a good overview over the page. Krug (2006, p. 31) writes that the
more important the text are, the larger they should be. If a website does not have clear
hierarchies it makes it harder for the user to scan and will require much work Figure 3 shows a
visual hierarchy where it is easy for the user to find what he is searching for. If the webpage
contains larger headings and smaller subheadings it will help to clarify the website structure. If a

- We all parse visual hierarchies—online and on paper—every day, but it happens so quickly
that the only time we’re even vaguely aware that we’re doing it is when we can’t do it—
when the visual cues (or absence of them) force us to think. A good visual hierarchy saves us
work by preprocessing the page for us, organizing and prioritizing its contents in a way that
we can grasp almost instantly. But when a page doesn’t have a clear visual hierarchy—if
everything looks equally important, for instance—we’re reduced to the much slower process
of scanning the page for revealing words and phrases, and then trying to form our own sense

Krug (10 of 42, kapitel 3) write about the advantage of conventions when it comes to web design, but
a problem seems to be that the designers can be unwilling to use them. Why? Krug claims that
designers are often tempted to create new things, even if the old thing works. When a webpage has
text, symbols and categories in a specific design it makes it easier for the users. Sometimes a it is even
possible for a user to use a webpage in a language they don’t even speak. If you take advantage of
conventions as a designer you will make it easier for the costumers.
