Introduction

Background of study

Kinesiotaping is a physical therapeutic approach to treating cancer related lymphedema. The idea of
using elastic tape to mimic the therapist's hands was first presented by Dr Kenzo Kase. A
technique widely used today to assist in the treatment of various acute conditions including
lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a condition that causes swelling in the body's tissues usually after
breast surgery called mastectomy or due to obstruction of lymphatic drainage. It is the swelling due to
build up of lymph fluid in the body. Kinesiotaping is the use of an elastic tape, called Kinesiotape and
the technique of using it is called kinesiotaping. It can also be used to manage other medical conditions
including musculoskeletal condition. The technique was developed in the 1970s in Japan by Kase et al.
and consists of tape applied to the skin. Lympheda Is a pathological condition affecting both the upper
and the lower extremities, it is the swelling due to build up of lymph fluid in the body.

Kinesiotaping also affects the hematobiochemical indices of people living with cancer-related
lymphedema. Hematobiochemical indices means all those biological and chemical components of blood.
It affects it in the way that kinosiotaping can increase the flow of blood and its components.

Many practitioners are of the opinion that kinesiotaping alone is not effective but its use with other
physical therapy techniques can improve on the hematobiochemical indices of patients with cancer
related lymphedema.

In addition of using kinesiotaping in the management of lymphedema, it can also be used to manage
other medical conditions including osteoarthritis etc. Kinesiotaping can be effective if properly used if
intervention starts early.

Statement of problem

With the increase in the awareness of physical therapy, the use of kinesiotaping in the
management of cancer related lymphedema should be practiced in other to maintain the
physical and hematobiochemical indices of cancer-related lymphedema but most practitioners
prefer other methods of management of cancer related lymphedema like complex
decongestive therapy even when they have the knowledge of kinesio taping why some might
not know. Most developing countries including our own country are not properly oriented in
the usage of kinesiotaping for the management of cancer related lymphedema. Most
practitioners believe that it is not effective and might not want to use it. This study Intends to
systematically review and meta-analyze the efficacy of kinesiotaping on physical and
hematobiochemical health indices of cancer patients with lymphedema.

Purpose of study:

The study is to examine the effectiveness of kinesiotaping on physical and hematobiochemical

indices of cancer related lymphedema.

Specific Objectives

1. To examine the use of kinesiotaping in the management of lymphedema

2. To check the effect of kinesiotaping on physical and hematobiochemical indices of cancer

patients.

Research Questions

This review will answer the following questions:

1. What are the benefits of kinesiotaping in the management of cancer related lymphedema.

2. What are the effects of kinesiotaping on physical and hematobiochemical indices of cancer
related lymphedema.

Sigificance of study:

1, it will provide us an up-to-date systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trial

control on the studies of the efficacy of Kinosiotaping on physical and hematobiochemical
indices of cancer-related lymphedema.

2; the outcome of this study will add to already existing knowledge on the use of kinesio taping
for the management of cancer-related lymphedema.

3. It will generate interest in the use of kinesio taping for the management of pastor related
lymphedema.

Delimitation of study:

Systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of kinesio taping on the physical and
hematobiochemical indices of cancer related lymphedema available on PubMed and goggle
scholar
Definition of operative terms

Kinesiotaping: Kinesiotaping Method is a therapeutic tool utilised by rehabilitation specialists in

all programs (paediatric, geriatric, orthopaedic, neurological, oncology and others) and levels of
care (acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, home care and Day Rehab).

Hematobiochemical indices: refers to the chemical and biological components of blood.

Cancer;Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to
other parts of the body.

Lymphedema:A condition in which extra lymph fluid builds up in tissues and causes swelling. It
may occur in an arm or leg if lymph vessels are blocked, damaged, or removed by surgery.

Method

Research Design; the research is going to be a systematic review with meta-analysis. It is going
to systematically review the efficacy of kinesiotaping on physical and hematobiochemical
indices health of cancer patients with lymphedema

Criteria for considering studies for review

Inclusion criteria:

Practitioners of evidence based practice (EBP) often use a specialised framework known as PICO
to facilitate literature search (schardt,Adams,Owners,Keitz,Fontch,2007),

P(population): participants in kinesiotaping of cancer related lymphedema

I(intervention); kinesiotaping

C(Comparism): other physical therapy modality

O(Outcome): will depend on the outcome measures that will be included in the studies

Exclusion criteria;

I. Studies published beyond 10 years ago.

II. Studies published in languages other than English language.

III. Any study that is not randomised control trial and primary studies.

Search Methods for the Identification study.

Electronic search: search studies for primary studies will be performed using the following data
bases;

I.Pubmed

II.goggle scholar

Search strategy will include the use of medical subject headings(MeSH) terms and keywords
that will be broadly representing the subject under study (efficacy OR effectiveness OR effects
AND kinesiotaping OR taping AND physical AND hematobiochemical OR chemistry of blood OR
biology of blood OR chemical biology of blood AND cancer AND lymphedema) combined using
the Boolean Operators (AND and OR).
