Since August, cab fares have increased in Fukuoka Prefecture (Fukuoka Prefecture),

Yamaguchi Prefecture (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and Kagoshima Prefecture (Kagoshima

Prefecture). Since the beginning of this year, cab fares have increased in 22 prefectures and
are expected to increase in others.

One of the reasons why cab fares are rising is that there are not enough cab drivers. The
number of drivers is more than 20% less than in 2019, the year before the spread of the new
strain of coronavirus.

At a company in Kagoshima City, many people have stopped working as drivers due to the
increased number of problems with the new strain of coronavirus and the increased age of
drivers. Although the number of tourists and other visitors is increasing, only about 60% of
the company's fleet is still in use due to a lack of drivers. The president said, "In order to get
younger and younger people to become drivers, it is necessary to raise their salaries. If we
didn't raise the rates, we would have had a hard time running the business.
