RATIO & PROPORTION
Ratio:

The ratio of two quantities a and b in the same units, is the fraction   and we write
it as a : b.
In the ratio a : b, we call a as the first term or antecedent and b, the second term
or consequent.
5
Eg. The ratio 5 : 9 represents with antecedent = 5, consequent = 9.
9
Rule: The multiplication or division of each term of a ratio by the same non-zero
number does not affect the ratio.
Eg. 4 : 5 = 8 : 10 = 12 : 15. Also, 4 : 6 = 2 : 3.
Proportion:
The equality of two ratios is called proportion.
If a : b = c : d, we write a : b :: c : d and we say that a, b, c, d are in proportion.
Here a and d are called extremes, while b and c are called mean terms.
Product of means = Product of extremes.
Thus, a : b :: c : d   (b x c) = (a x d).
Fourth Proportional:
If a : b = c : d, then d is called the fourth proportional to a, b, c.
Third Proportional:
a : b = c : d, then c is called the third proportion to a and b.
Mean Proportional:
Mean proportional between a and b is ab.
Comparison of Ratios:
a c
We say that (a : b) > (c : d)       > .
b d
1. Compounded Ratio:
The compounded ratio of the ratios:
(a : b), (c : d), (e : f) is (ace : bdf).
2. Duplicate Ratios:
Duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a2 : b2).
Sub-duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a : b).
Triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a3 : b3).
Sub-triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a1/3 : b1/3).
Simplification of Ratio

1|Page
If the terms of the ratio are expressed in fraction form; then find the Least Common
Multiple of the denominators of these fractions. Now, multiply each fraction by the
L.C.M. The ratio is simplified.
Simplify the following ratios. (a) 5 / 29 : 3 /8 : 4/9 (b) 2¹/₇ : 3²/₅ (a) The L.C.M. of 2, 8, 9
= 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 = 8 × 9 = 72
Now, multiplying each fraction by the L.C.M. 5/2 × 72 = 160 3/8 × 72 = 27 4/9 × 72 = 32
So, the ratio becomes 160 : 27 : 32
(b) 2¹/₇ : 3²/₅ = 15/7 : 17/5 = 15/7 × 5/17= 75/119 So, the ratio becomes 75 : 119

6 oxen or 8 cows can graze a field in 28 days. How long would 9 oxen and 2 cows
take to graze the same field?
6 oxen = 8 cows
1 ox = 8/6 cows
Hence, 9 oxen ≡ (8/6 × 9) cows = 12 cows
Hence, (9 oxen + 2 cows) ≡ (12 cows + 2 cows) = 14 cows Now,
Inverse proportion
More cows Hence, Less days
Days Cows
28 8
x 14
x/28=8/14 Hence, 14 x =224
x =224/14
x =16
14 cows can graze the field in (28 × 8)/14 days [more cows, less days] = 16 days Hence,
9 oxen and 2 cows can graze the field in 16 days.
A fort had provisions for 300 men for 90 days. After 20 days, 50 men left the fort.
How long would the food last at the same rate?
Remaining number of men = (300 - 50) = 250.
Remaining number of days = (90 - 20) days = 70 days.
300 men had provisions for 70 days
1 man had provisions for (300 × 70) days [less men, more days]
250 men had provisions for (300 × 70)/250 days [more men, more days] = 84 days.
Hence, the remaining food will last for 84 days.

Proportion
We have already learnt that statement of equality of ratios is called proportion,
if four quantities a, b, c, d are in proportion,
then a : b = c : d or a : b : : c : d (: : is the symbol used to denote proportion).
Hence, a × d = b × c Hence, ad = bc
Here a, d is called the extreme terms in which a is called the first term and d is called the
fourth term and b, c is called the mean terms in which b is called the second term and c is
called the third term. Thus, we say, if product of mean terms = the product of extreme
terms, then the terms are said to be in proportion.
Also, if a: b:: c : d, then d is called the fourth proportional of a, b, c.
Continued Proportion
The three quantities a, b, c are said to be in continued proportion if a : b :: b : c Hence, a
× c = b² Hence, b² = ac Hence, b = √ac
Here, b is called the mean proportional of a and c.
The square of middle term is equal to the product of 1ˢᵗ term and 3ʳᵈ term.
Also, if a : b :: b : c, then c is called the third proportional of a, b.
Example: Determine if the following are in proportion.
(a) 6, 12, 24
(a) Here, product of first term and third term = 6 × 24 = 144 and square of middle term =
(12) ² = 12 × 12 = 144
(b) (b) 1²/₃, 6¹/₄, ⁴/₉, ⁵/₃
(c) Here, a = 1²/₃ b = 6¹/₄ c = ⁴/₉ d = ⁵/₃ a : b = 1²/₃ : 6¹/₄ c : d = ⁴/₉ : ⁵/₃ = ⁵/₃ ∶ ²⁵/₄ =
(4/9)/(5/3) = (5/3)/(25/4) = 4/9 × 3/5 = 5/3 × 4/25 = 4/3 × 1/5 = 4/15 = 4/15 Since, a : b =
c : d Therefore, 1²/₃, 6¹/₄, ⁴/₉, ⁵/₃ are in proportion.

Arrange the following ratios in descending order.

2 : 3, 3 : 4, 5 : 6, 1 : 5
Given ratios are 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 1/5 The L.C.M. of 3, 4, 6, 5 is 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 = 60
Now, 2/3 = (2 × 20)/(3 × 20) = 40/60
3/4 = (3 × 15)/(4 × 15) = 45/60
5/6 = (5 × 10)/(6 × 10) = 50/60
1/5 = (1 × 12)/(5 × 12) = 12/60
Clearly, 50/60 > 45/60 > 40/60 > 12/60
Therefore, 5/6 > 3/4 > 2/3 > 1/5
So, 5 : 6 > 3 : 4 > 2 : 3 > 1 : 5

Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 4. If the sum of numbers is 63, find the numbers.
Sum of the terms of the ratio = 3 + 4 = 7
Sum of numbers = 63
Therefore, first number = 3/7 × 63 = 27
Second number = 4/7 × 63 = 36 Therefore, the two numbers are 27 and 36.
If x : y = 1 : 2, find the value of (2x + 3y) : (x + 4y)
x : y = 1 : 2 means x/y = 1/2
Now, (2x + 3y) : (x + 4y) = (2x + 3y)/(x + 4y)
[Divide numerator and denominator by y.]
= [(2x + 3y)/y]/[(x + 4y)/2] = [2(x/y) + 3]/[(x/y) + 4],
put x/y = ½
We get = [2 (1/2) + 3)/(1/2 + 4) = (1 + 3)/[(1 + 8)/2]
= 4/(9/2) = 4/1 × 2/9 = 8/9
Therefore the value of (2x + 3y) : (x + 4y) = 8 : 9
(Expenditure  =  Income - Savings)
Then, expenditure of the 1st person  =  4x - 50
Expenditure of the 2nd person  =  5x - 50
Expenditure ratio  =  7 : 9  (given)
So, we have
(4x - 50) : (5x - 50)  =  7 : 9
Use cross product rule.
9(4x - 50)  =  7(5x - 50)
36x - 450  =  35x - 350
x  =  100
Then, the income of the second person is
=  5x
=  5(100)
=  500.
So, income of the second person is $500.
A, B and C enter into a partnership by investing Rs.3600, Rs.4400 and Rs.2800. A is
a working partner and gets a fourth of the profit for his services and the remaining
profit is divided amongst the three in the rate of their investments. What is the
amount of profit that B gets if A gets a total of Rs. 8000?
Let x be the profit.
Their investment ratio = 3600:4400:2800 = 9:11:7
A’s profit of Rs. 8000 =(1/4 x x) + 1/3 x(3/4 x x) = ½ xx
X= 16000/-

On a certain day, the ratio of the passenger in the 1st class and the second class
travelling by train is 1 : 3. the ratio of the fares collected from each first class and
second class passengers is 30 : 1. If the total amount collected from all the
passengers is Rs 1,320. Find the amount in Rs, collected from the second class
passengers.
Let the number of passengers travelling by first class and second class be x and 3x
respectively.
Lets the fares collected from each of the first class and second class
passengers be 30y and y respectively.
Hence x(30y) + 3x(y) = 30xy + 3xy = 33xy = 1320
xy = 40.
Total amount collected from the second class = 3xy = 3 × 40 = Rs 120.
The monthly salaries of two persons are in the ratio of 4 : 7. If each receives an

Let the salaries be 4x and 7x Therefore,
[(4x+25)/(7x+25)]=3 /5
5(4x+25) =3(7x+25)
20x+125=21x+75 x = 50 Therefore, their salaries are 4×50 & 7x 50 i.e., 200 & 350

A, B and C play cricket. A's runs are to B's runs and B's runs are to C's as 3 :
2.They get altogether 342 runs. How many runs did A make?
