Abstract
The responsibility of any engineer irrespective of sector is to design objects, machines or
devices that not only make life easier for the target market but are also safe. Consideration
should be given to the material used, cost of materials, availability of materials, loads and
stresses to be induced in the material and finally, whether the material will fail for the
intended use.

Introduction
This paper will investigate the design of a device. Special emphasis will be placed on shaft
design, design of bearings, springs and gears by utilizing the methods learned in MAD710S.

Motivation
The class was given a task to design a device as part of the assessment for the module
MAD710S

Project Description:
The average home cook may use a traditional whisk day-to-day for baking, cooking and will
even use the main mechanism of a whisk to clean it.
The problem with the main mechanism of use of the traditional whisk is that it does not
multiply the input power from the user in any efficient way. This is due to the fact that the
traditional whisk has no mechanic elements in its design.
The aims of this group’s project is to solve the above mentioned problem, by introducing
gears and bearings to the product design. This is to create a smooth experience for the user
and a product that is able to endure the amplified power output that the whisk will be
subjected to.

Design Requirements:

• The final design has to have two functional whisk ends and a free rolling bearing
handle for ease of turning.
• The design also has to functional at relatively high rotational speeds, up to 50 rpm
without failure.
• The final design must also be cost effective, and streamlined in its design.
