Cultivars recommended in different parts of India:
Potato Varieties
Most of the improved potato varieties are developed at the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Kufri,
Shimla.
Majority of early varieties are clonal selections derived from foreign varieties or from popular
acclimatized varieties that survived after introduction.
Varieties are distinguished based on their habit, pigmentation of stem, leaf, flower and shape, size, colour
and depth of eyes and flesh colour of tubers.
A large number of earlier varieties either developed at CPRI, Shimla or evolved as famous selections from
improved varieties were replaced by new improved varieties. Satha, Gola, Up-to-date, Phulva, Great Scot,
President, Kufri Kuber, Kufri Kisan, Kufri Neela, Kufri Khasi-Garo, Kufri Naveen, Kufri Chamatkar, Kufri
Neelmani, Kufri Sheetman, Kufri Alankar, Kufri Jeevan, Kufri Moti, Kufri Lavkar and Kufri Dewa are a few of
the earlier varieties. Of the Indian potato varieties, few are early- (70-80 days), some medium-(90-100 days)
and late-(100-110 days) maturing. Some varieties possess white or yellow skin, whereas few possess red tuber
skin. Most of these varieties possess resistance/tolerance to major pests and diseases.
Early Varieties Main season varieties Late Varieties
(ready in 70-80 days) (ready in 90-95 days) (100-120 days)
Kufri Garima: Suitable for cultivation in Indo-gangetic plains and plateau regions. 350-400 q/ha. Moderately
resistance to late blight. Good keeping quality and shows good response to fertilizer. Easy to cook.
Kufri Sahyadri : It is a high yielding medium maturing potato variety has been released by CPRI, Ooty.
Suited for cultivation in summer, autumn and spring, the average yield of tuber ranged between 28 and 35
tonnes/ha. Resistant to two most commonly affecting diseases like Potato Cyst (Nematode) and Late
Blight disease of potato and its best suited for Karnataka climatic conditions.
Kufri Karan: It is a medium maturing late blight resistant hybrid was recommended for release in 36th
Annual Group Meeting on AICRP (P). It possess resistance to multiple diseases viz., late blight, apical leaf
curl virus, potato virus Y, potato virus S, potato leaf roll virus, potato virus A, potato virus M with
moderate resistance to potato cyst nematode. It produces nearly 30 tons/ha yield and is recommended for
Indian hills and Plateau region.
