Sodium Hydroxide Content
Sodium Hydroxide Content
CONCENTRATION OF
SODIUM HYDROXIDE
OBJECTIVE:
To determine
the
concentration
of sodium
hydroxide.
SCOPE:
The scope of
this procedure
covers the
following
items:
1 . Preparation
of indicator.
2 . Method of
determination
3 . Calculation
to interpret the
results.
REAGENTS:
1 . 20ml
distilled water.
2 . 1.0 N
Hydrochloric
Acid (HCl).
3.
phenephthaline
indicator. (0.5
gm of
phenephthaline
dissolved in 50
ml ethanol)
4. 0.5 gm caustic soda (sodium hydroxide)
APPARATUS
:
1 . Burette 50 ml.
2 . Conical flask 250 ml.
3 . Mass
Balance
(tolerance ±
0.01) 4 .
Dropper
METHOD:
1 . Place 20ml
distilled water
into the conical
flask then put a
drop of
phenephthaline
indicator.
2 . Weight and
record the mass
of caustic (range
0.5gm).
3 . Transfer the
caustic into
conical flask that
containing
distilled water
(The mixture
will turn
colorless to
purple).
4 . Titrate the
mixture with 1N
HCl until the
color disappears.
Record the
volume of the
acid used in
this titration.
5. Calculate the
sodium
hydroxide
contents as
follow:
Sodium
hydroxide
content (%) =
acid
volume((ml)x
normality of
acid x 0.040
Mass of caustic
(gm)
REPORT
Record the
result in 2
decimal points.
