Donald Trump’s attorney said Sunday that the former president did nothing wrong in
pressuring former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn election results on Jan. 6,
2021 — nor in asking the Georgia secretary of state to “find” votes in the 2020 election.

Trump was simply asking Pence “for a pause” as the House was certifying the votes on
the day mobs stormed the U.S. Capitol, and that did not violate the Constitution,
attorney John Lauro said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The former president was indicted last week on four federal criminal charges
stemming from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020
election.

“A technical violation of the Constitution is not a violation of criminal law,” Trump’s

attorney said. “Everything that President Trump did was while he was in office as a
president.

possible role in the riot.

“His lawyer is up there trying to say he’s just expressing his First Amendment rights,”
said Raskin, also on “Meet the Press.” “That’s deranged.

“A technical violation of the Constitution is a violation of the Constitution,” he said.

“Our Constitution is designed to stop people from trying to overthrow elections and
trying to overthrow the government.

“There are people who are in jail for several years for counterfeiting one vote,” Raskin
said. “He tried to steal the entire election.”

Trump, who is also is under indictment in New York and Florida and likely faces
charges in Georgia as well, said Friday that his legal troubles were good for his
presidential campaign.

“Any time they file an indictment, we go way up in the polls,” Trump told a Republican
Party dinner in Montgomery, Ala. “We need one more indictment to close out this
election. One more indictment, and this election is closed out.”

Trump made controversial remarks online that prompted prosecutors to seek a

protective order from the federal judge in the Jan. 6 case to limit what Trump and his
attorneys can share publicly.

On social media on Friday, he wrote: “If you go after me, I’m coming after you!”

As they turn over evidence to Trump’s legal team, prosecutors said they were
concerned he will post about grand jury transcripts or other sensitive or confidential
information.

Trump and his lawyers face a 5 p.m. deadline on Monday to respond to the
prosecutors’ move.

Lauro said on ABC’s “This Week” that he would welcome Pence’s testimony in the
federal case against Trump.

“What he will do is completely eliminate any doubt that Mr. Trump, President Trump
firmly believed that the election irregularities had led to inappropriate results,” Lauro
said.

Pence appeared on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” and said Trump had been telling him
for weeks ahead of Jan. 6 that the vice president could reject votes.

“I had no such authority,” Pence said. “No vice president in American history had ever
asserted that authority, and no one ever should.”
