The importance of friendship
What makes a best friend?
We all know that friendship is one of the most
important factors contributing to our well-being
and happiness and that it can reduce stress. And
now, a recent Harvard study explains how having
good friendships in our life even helps us recover
from illness more quickly. Friendship is also
important for our self-esteem. Being with people
who make us feel good about ourselves and are
interested in what we have to say makes us feel
more likeable, popular and, as a result, more
confident. But what is the definition of a true
best friend, and what qualities do people look for
in a friend?
We’d like to hear from you! How do you form
good friendships? Do you choose friends who
have similar personalities to you? Write to us and
let us know!
Susan: I need to know that my friends are loyal
and will always be there to talk to in good times
and bad. I prefer to have a small circle of really
close friends, rather than a big group of friends,
who I don’t have much time for. I know my best
friend, Hazel, will always support me. She’s the
first person I go to when I’m feeling down. I can
tell her anything, and she always does her best to
help.
Josh: Generous people are happier with their
lives and are likely to have more close friends.
But being generous doesn’t just mean you are
happy to lend someone money or your favourite
clothes. It means giving up your time for your
friends to help them fix their bicycle or visit them
when they’re ill. This is what I look for in my
friends.

Lily: It’s important to me that my friends are
cheerful and optimistic. I don’t like being with
people who are negative and always see the glass
half empty! They make me feel a bit depressed.
Spending time with easy-going friends, who don’t
complain about things, helps me to look on the
bright side of life.
Reuben: I like friends who are reliable. They do
what they say they are going to do and arrive
when they say they are going to arrive. It’s very
annoying when you make plans and your friends
forget to come or arrive really late. It shows a
lack of respect.
Dan: My best friends tend to be very relaxed, but
lively, like me. They want to have fun and be
adventurous, but they don’t worry too much
about things. You can’t let worries and fears stop
you from doing stuff, or life passes you by! ‘Just
go with the flow.’ That’s what I say! If my friends
have the same attitude, we usually get along
well.
