Morris 4-1
English SBA - Reflection 1

Before starting this project, food inflation in Jamaica was a topic oblivious to
me. I thought it had no real effect on my life. Of course, I’ve heard my mother
complain about food prices but apart from jokes about how expensive small
items like bag juices were getting with my friends, I felt food inflation wasn’t
severe enough for my attention.

My first source broke this notion. “Food Prices in Jamaica Going Up” a video
on Television Jamaica’s YouTube channel. It opened my view to how high the
cost of food was rising and how quickly it was doing so. It showed the impact
on consumers and Jamaican manufacturers. I now knew one of the main reasons
for price inflation in Jamaica was the increasing cost of importing goods.
After realising how severe food inflation was, I wanted to know how prices in
Jamaica compared to those abroad. Another Youtube video titled
“COMPARING FOOD PRICES AT POPULAR SUPERMARKETS IN
JAMAICA. COST OF LIVING.” on a channel called Rochielin, showed how
shopping in Jamaica compares to overseas by contrasting prices for commonly
purchased food items. “Cost of Living in Jamaica. Grocery Shopping.
Supermarket.”, a Youtube video on JAMAICA WITH IRIE’s channel, did a
similar process however it compared prices for a wider variety of items and how
the prices vary in different seasons and why certain goods will be more
expensive than others. “2022 Food Prices in Jamaica - Plus Tips to Buy
Groceries in Jamaica”, a blog on makeitjamaica.com for Mais Oui Villa, shares
factors in the pricing of Jamaican food and where they prefer and recommend
others to buy their groceries while in Jamaica.
