Calafia - is a warrior queen who ruled over a kingdom of
Black women living on the Island of California. The
character of Queen Calafia was created by Spanish writer
Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo who first introduced her in his
popular novel entitled Las sergas de Esplandián (The
Adventures of Esplandián), written around 1500.[1] he name
of Calafia was likely formed from the Arabic word khalifa
(religious state leader) which is known as caliph in English
and califa in Spanish. Similarly, the name of Calafia's
monarchy, California, likely originated from the same root,
fabricated by the author to remind the 16th-century Spanish
reader of the reconquista, a centuries-long fight between
Christians and Muslims which had recently concluded in
Spain. The character of Calafia is used by Rodríguez de
Montalvo to portray the superiority of chivalry in which the
attractive virgin queen is conquered, converted to Christian
beliefs and married off. Calafia, also called Califia, has been
depicted as the Spirit of California, and has been the subject
of modern-day sculpture, paintings, stories and films; she
often figures in the myth of California's origin, symbolizing
an untamed and bountiful land prior to Europeans taking
the land by force.[3]

Moai /ˈmoʊ.aɪ/ ( listen), or mo‘ai, are monolithic human
figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island in
eastern Polynesia between the years 1250 and 1500.[1][2]
Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku, the main moai quarry, but
hundreds were transported from there and set on stone

platforms called ahu around the island's perimeter. Almost all
moai have overly large heads three-eighths the size of the
whole statue. The moai are chiefly the living faces (aringa ora)
of deified ancestors (aringa ora ata tepuna).[3] The statues still
gazed inland across their clan lands when Europeans first
visited the island in 1722, but all of them had fallen by the
latter part of the 19th century.[4]

The production and transportation of the more than

900 statues[5][6] are considered remarkable creative
and physical feats.[7] The tallest moai erected, called
Paro, was almost 10 metres (33 ft) high and weighed
82 tonnes (90.4 tons).[8][9] The heaviest moai erected
was a shorter but squatter moai at Ahu Tongariki,
weighing 86 tonnes. And one unfinished sculpture, if
completed, would have been approximately 21 m
(69 ft) tall, with a weight of about 270 tonnes.[citation
needed]
The moai toppled after European contact, when
islander traditions were forced to radically change.[4]

The Alhambra (/ælˈhæmbrə/; Spanish: [aˈlambɾa]; Arabic: ‫[ ل َا ْر َم ْحلا‬ʔælħæmˈɾˠɑːʔ], Al-Ḥamrā,
lit. "The Red One"),[Note 1][Note 2] the complete Arabic form of which was Qalat Al-
Hamra,[Note 3] is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It was
originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications,
and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by
the Moorish emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current
palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of
Granada.[1] After the conclusion of the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the site became the
Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella (where Christopher Columbus received royal
endorsement for his expedition), and the palaces were partially altered to Renaissance
tastes. In 1526 Charles I & V commissioned a new Renaissance palace better befitting the
Holy Roman Emperor in the revolutionary Mannerist style influenced by Humanist philosophy
in direct juxtaposition with the Nasrid Andalusian architecture, but which was ultimately
never completed due to Morisco rebellions in Granada.

Chichén Itzá is a world-famous complex of Mayan ruins on Mexico's
Yucatán Peninsula. A massive step pyramid known as El Castillo
dominates the 6.5-sq.-km. ancient city, which thrived from around
600 A.D. to the 1200s. Graphic stone carvings survive at structures like
the ball court, Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of the Skulls.
Nightly sound-and-light shows illuminate the buildings' sophisticated
geometry.

Etowah Mounds is a 54-acre (220,000 sq. miles) archaeological site in Bartow
County, Georgia south of Cartersville, in the United States. Built and occupied in
three phases, from 1000Ð1550 CE, the prehistoric site is located on the north
shore of the Etowah River. Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site is a designated
National Historic Landmark, managed by the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources. It is the most intact Mississippian culture site in the Southeastern
United States. These were made during the same Mississippian Temple Mound
Building Period, as were mounds at Moundville (near Tuscaloosa, Alabama) and
at Cahokia - roughly 700 AD to 1400 AD. The six flat-topped earthen knolls and a
plaza were used for rituals by several thousand Native Americans between 1000
and 1500 A.D. The largest mound has a height of 63 feet. Only nine percent of

this site has been excavated, but we already know that the mounds have caves
underneath them as do some Mayan and Giza pyramids. It may also just be a
coincidence, but there is a Limonite mine at Etowah. Limonite is an iron-bearing
ore with a very special use - as radiation shielding for atomic bomb tests,
nuclear reactors and space stations. It is also what gives Mars its red color.

Cahokia Mounds - The site of an ancient Native American city, the
mounds are located in Collinsville, Illinois in the southern part of the
state across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. Cahokia
Mounds covers 2,200 acres and contains 70 mounds. Visitors can just
imagine the once elaborately planned community with a complex and
sophisticated society. The depth and breadth of the mounds and their
size and complexity are breathtaking and thought-provoking at the
same time. Cahokia Mounds dates back to A.D. 700 with first settlers

known to be the late Woodland Indians. They lived in villages along
Cahokia Creek where they hunted, fished and grew food. Starting at
around A.D. 1000, the Mississippian culture, defined as a mound-
building Native American civilization, began to come alive with highly
structured communities with their own political and social systems.
Because of the stable food base that was able to be developed,
Cahokia Mounds began to support larger, more permanent
populations. At the peak of civilization, between A.D. 1050 – 1200, it
spanned six square miles and reached the estimated population of
20,000. The mounds themselves are surrounded by mystery. What
drew these people to the site in the first place? Though inhabitants of
Cahokia Mounds left no written records beyond symbols written on
pottery, shell, wood, copper and stone, the original 120 mounds are
believed to be built for ritual, burial and elite shelter purposes. They
were made from earth dug from “borrow pits” and transported in
baskets on the backs of settlers to the spot of the mound. Today, the
mounds still show the stages of construction including borrow pits.
You can just imagine the intensive labor that went into developing
these complex structures.

Cahokia Mounds and covers more than 14 acres at its

nearby and farmed the mound’s terraces from 1809 –

Opa-locka is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the
2010 U.S. Census, the population was 15,219.[3] The city was developed by Glenn
Curtiss. Developed based on a One Thousand and One Nights theme, Opa-locka has
the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the Western hemisphere,[4]
and streets with such names as Sabur Lane, Sultan Avenue, Ali Baba Avenue, Perviz
Avenue, and Sesame Street.[4] Opa-locka has an area of 4.2 square miles (11 km2) and
is located in the northeastern area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The name Opa-
locka is an abbreviation of a Seminole place name, spelled Opa-tisha-wocka-locka.
The original name probably signified a wooded hammock in a swamp.[5]

In a city where the town hall is a sheik’s palace, the
Chamber of Commerce is a Turkish harem, and the train
station is a mosque, you would probably expect to be
somewhere in the Middle East. But no, this is Opa-
Locka, Florida, a diminutive city northwest of
Miami with the nation’s largest and strangest collection
of Islamic Revival architecture.

Researchers have attributed construction of the mound to three
different prehistoric indigenous cultures. Originally thought to be
Adena in origin, a 1996 carbon dating study led scholars to believe the
mound was built by members of the Fort Ancient culture around 1070
CE.[3] Most recent dating places the mound at around 300 BCE, once
again suggesting Adena construction.[4] Serpent Mound is the largest
serpent effigy in the world.[5]

The Great Serpent Mound is a 1,348-foot (411 m)-long,[2] three-foot-
high prehistoric effigy mound on a plateau of the Serpent Mound
crater along Ohio Brush Creek in Adams County, Ohio. Maintained
within a park by the Ohio History Connection, it has been designated
a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of
Interior. The Serpent Mound of Ohio was first reported from surveys
by Ephraim Squire and Edwin Davis in their historic volume Ancient
Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, published in 1848 by the newly
founded Smithsonian Museum.

Fort Ancient is a name for a Native American culture that flourished from 1000-
1750 CE[1] among a people who predominantly inhabited land along the Ohio
River in areas of modern-day southern Ohio, northern Kentucky, southeastern
Indiana and western West Virginia. They were a maize-based agricultural
society who lived in sedentary villages and built ceremonial platform mounds.
The Fort Ancient culture was once thought to have been an expansion of the
Mississippian cultures. It is now accepted as an independently developed
culture that descended from the Hopewell culture (100 BCE–500 CE). The Fort
Ancient Culture's most famous mound is called the serpent mound.
