WEEK 1 DAY 3
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl named Cinderella. She
lived with her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. They treated
Cinderella very badly. One day, they were invited for a grand ball in
the king’s palace. But Cinderella’s stepmother would not let her go.
Cinderella was made to sew new party gowns for her stepmother
and stepsisters, and curl their hair. They then went to the ball,
leaving Cinderella alone at home.
When Cinderella entered the palace, everybody was struck by her beauty. Nobody, not even
Cinderella’s stepmother or stepsisters, knew who she really was in her pretty clothes and shoes.
The handsome prince also saw her and fell in love with Cinderella. He went to her and asked,
“Do you want to dance?” And Cinderella said, “Yes!” The prince danced with her all night and
nobody recognized the beautiful dancer. Cinderella was so happy dancing with the prince that
she almost forgot what the fairy godmother had said. At the last moment, Cinderella
remembered her fairy godmother’s words and she rushed to go home. “Oh! I must go!” she
cried and ran out of the palace. One of her glass slippers came off but Cinderella did not turn
back for it. She reached home just as the clock struck twelve. Her coach turned back into a
pumpkin, the horses into mice and her fine ball gown into rags. Her stepmother and stepsisters
reached home shortly after that. They were talking about the beautiful lady who had been
dancing with the prince.
The prince had fallen in love with Cinderella and wanted to find out who the beautiful girl was,
but he did not even know her name. He found the glass slipper that had come off Cinderella’s
foot as she ran home. The prince said, “I will find her. The lady whose foot fits this slipper will be
the one I marry!” The next day, the prince and his servants took the glass slipper and went to all
the houses in the kingdom. They wanted to find the lady whose feet would fit in the slipper. All
the women in the kingdom tried the slipper but it would not fit any of them. Cinderella’s
stepsisters also tried on the little glass slipper. They tried to squeeze their feet and push hard
into the slipper, but the servant was afraid the slipper would break. Cinderella’s stepmother
would not let her try the slipper on, but the prince saw her and said, “Let her also try on the

slipper!” The slipper fit her perfectly. The prince recognized her from the ball. He married
Cinderella and together they lived happily ever after.

The emperor of China lived in a beautiful palace with a large forest all around it. He liked

One day, the Emperor of China gets a new book about his palace and he reads it.
“What is this? A nightingale? In my forest?” said the emperor.
The emperor is angry because he didn’t know about it. He tells his men to go into
the forest to find the nightingale. As they are walking in the forest, suddenly they hear
a beautiful song.
“There is it! It is sitting in the tree.” said one of the men. They take the
nightingale to the emperor and it sings for him. He loves the nightingale’s song and asks
it to stay and sing for him every day. One day, he gets a mechanical nightingale from the
Emperor of Japan. Everyone loves the new nightingale because it can sing and it’s got
diamonds on it too. The real nightingale hasn’t got diamonds on it. It is sad and leaves.

Another great emergency happened everywhere. The stepmother told the woodcutter to
leave the children in the forest again, even further in the forest this time. With a heavy

was locked. He told Gretel who was crying to not worry because he will find a way. With no
pebbles available, Hansel crumbled the piece of bread, which his stepmother gave him and
dropped the crumbs onto the ground when they were on their way to the forest the next
morning. He did not notice that birds came and ate the crumbs after they had cleared the
path. So, when night came, Hansel and Gretel could not find their way home again after being
left deep in the woods. They started to worry but they tried searching for their way home
until the morning came but they were still unsuccessful. Tired and hungry, they continued

Villa Sentosa, a traditional Malay house in Kampung Morten, Melaka, was built in 1920. It was
constructed without a single nail by one of the village founders and headman, Haji Hashim
Datuk Demang Haji Abdul Ghani. Being part of national heritage, Villa Sentosa features
traditional Mala architecture and is a treasure trove of antiques. The house is mainly made of
timber with an inner courtyard and minimal partitions for interior walls. This allows for good
ventilation and lighting. Furniture is also kept to the minimum and most of the activities are done
on the floor. Haji Hashim’s descendants, who still live in the house, have turned it into a
museum, exhibiting the heirlooms he left. Among them is a 500-year-old Majapahit dagger, 100-
year-old Quran, a traditional Malay wedding gown and old costumes, ceramics from the Ming
Dynasty and medals which Haji Hashim received for his service to the government. Other
valuable souvenirs include a 200-year-old gong, a tea set from England, muskets and numerous
family photographs.

WEEK 12 DAY 1
Do you know how important water is? All living things will die without water. We use water in our
daily lives. Besides using water for drinking, we also use water for bathing, washing and watering the
plants. Plants need water to grow and produce food. The green substance called chlorophyll also helps the
plants to produce their own food. Water also plays another important role in human lives. For ages, people
have used it as a means of transportation. People used rafts, boats, canoes and ferries to travel on water to
fulfill their needs. With modern technologies, big ships can now travel on water faster and deliver goods all
around the world. Looking at the impact that water has on human life, we need to appreciate water more.

UNIT 7: HEALTHY AND WISE
WEEK 14 DAY 1
Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Cleanliness is very important when we handle food. There are many ways to ensure that the
food we prepare is clean and healthy to eat.
First, we must wash all fruits and vegetables carefully before eating or cooking. We must never
eat unwashed apples and oranges or unwashed beans and carrots. The reason is they may still
contain pesticides which may harm us. Not only must we wash all pots and pans but also
dishes, forks and spoons. We must use clean water and soap to do this.
Clearly, this will help remove all germs and bacteria. Personal cleanliness is also very important.
Make sure that your hair is covered before you begin to cook. Always wash your hands with
soap and water before you prepare or serve food.
Finally, remember to keep all food covered. Also keep gardens and drains clean. Remember!
Rubbish attracts flies and rats. Unclean surroundings too, may lead to diseases.
