Anne with an E is a coming-of-age drama about the story of Anne Shirley, a sensitive

and imaginative orphan who is sent to live with the Cuthberts in rural Prince Edward
Island.

All throughout, the series had a beautiful and nostalgic atmosphere, with its vibrant
cinematography, luscious landscapes, and charming music. The characters were all
wonderfully written and acted. Anne’s journey of self-discovery, and her interactions
with the townspeople of Avonlea, made for an engaging and moving storyline for each
episode.
The cinematography of the series is absolutely stunning. Every frame is meticulously
crafted to evoke emotion and create a vivid world. The show employs a variety of shots
and angles to make each scene visually interesting. From the sweeping long shots of the
vast landscapes to the close-ups of the characters' emotions, the show's cinematography
succeeded in captivating the audience, in captivating me.
However, the color palette of the show is arguably the pièce de résistance of the show.
The soft, muted colors to create a gentle atmosphere were always effective, and the bold
colors used in highlighting important moments were very clever. These colors are used in
crafty ways to convey the emotion of every single scene. For example, in a scene where
Anne is feeling sorrowful, the scene is dominated by muted blues and distant grays, while
in a scene where she is feeling empowered, the entire landscape is bathed in golden light
that is only amplified by its setting.

As for the music of Anne with an E, it was a perfect blend of modern and classical
elements, creating a unique and beautiful score that captures the spirit of the series. The
opening theme is a beautiful piano solo that really sets the tone of the series, and on the
other hand, the underscore features gentle strings and woodwinds to create a dream-like
atmosphere. The music is full of emotion and often features sweeping melodies and
poignant themes that enhance the drama and emotion of the show.

However, there are a few issues that detract from the overall quality of the show. First,
the pacing of the show is a bit off, especially during the first season. Albeit progressing,
the show felt more of an anthology at times. The first few episodes move quickly and
then the pace slows down considerably after a while. Additionally, there were some
points in the story that feel a bit contrived and forced, which almost took away the
believability of the show. (I’m looking at you Gold Rush Arc).

As for the ending, it was satisfying in a way that it leaves you wanting for more.
However, knowing that it is cancelled and there is no more fourth season is a constant
dread I’ll carry for a long time. My favorite episode for Season 2 is Episode 5. As it is,
for me, the highlight of the show’s story and aesthetic.
Overall, Anne with an E is an excellent show that has brilliant cinematography that
captures the magical element the show is trying to adapt. The creative use of shots,
angles, and colors help to create a vivid world and bring the characters and their stories to
life. The show is definitely a must-see for fans of the novel and those who enjoy a
character-driven drama. 9/10.
