Conclusion After researching the existing market, I have an idea of what aspects to include in my product and what not too. Products that are captivating and eye-catching are extremely expensive and additional skills are required to

does not increase the cost as much.

MATERIALS
Cake Tasting Box
The material we will be using for the Cake Tasting Box will be food-grade white packaging paper. Since it is food grade, it will ensure that chemicals
from the box are not transferred to food components. It is a card paper that can be used to store food items. It is a good material to use because:
1. It is food grade
2. It is strong and durable
3. Can be recycled
4. Easy to print on
5. It is lightweight
Menu Card
The material we will be using to make the menu card is cardboard. Cardboard is a generic term for heavy artificial paper-based products,
usually brown colored, having greater paper pulp material and superior timber or other specific mechanical attributes to the cardboard; such as
shavings of wood, and different types of wood. I would be covering the cardboard paper with designs printed on normal paper sheet to make it look
attractive. It is a good material to use because:

1. Strong and durable

2. Can be recycled
3. Long lasting
4. Inexpensive
5. Easily available
Point of Sale Display
The material I will be using to make the Point-of-Sale display is corrugated cardboard. Corrugated cardboard is a heavy-duty material and is
strong to be able to hold the components on the POS display. I will be covering the corrugated cardboard with chevron designs in warm pink
made using CAD design printed on a normal A3 size sheet to coordinate with the colour theme. Corrugated cardboard is a good material to
use because:
1. It is strong and durable
2. Can be recycled
3. Long lasting
4. Inexpensive
5. Easily available
6. Stable enough to hold the components of the POS display like the menu card and the cake tasting box

SURFACE FINISH TECHNIQUES
Surface Techniques are a range of different industrial processes that change the surface of a manufactured product to attain a certain property.
Finishing techniques can be applied to:
- Make a material waterproof
- Protect it against wear and tear; increase its durability and resistance
- Give it a more professional look
- To make the product thicker and stronger
- Control the surface friction
Cake Tasting Box
For the cake-tasting box I will not have a surface finish because its not required since it’s a disposable product that would be tossed in the bin after one use
Point of Sale Display
For the Point-of-Sale display, the finishing technique I would be using is Lamination, because it will increase the durability of the product, make it last
longer, and offer it protection against some weather conditions, finger smudges, stains and spills, etc. It will also give a professional look to the display
and increase its attractiveness.
Menu
For the Menu card, I would make use of the finishing technique of Varnishing. It will provide a protective coating for the Menu card and will also offer
resistance to some level of water damage.

Colour Combinations Ongoing Research

The colour combination for my products is shades of warm pink and I have done multiple research regarding the current trends of the

First, I sketched a rectangular A4 size box on a cardboard piece and cut it out using a pair of scissor. I covered it in chevron pattern which I made using Photoshop and printed it out using a laser printer. I also used 2 shades of pink and a shade of
yellow for the background of the interior of the menu. I made the designs of the Food items and their prices in the shape of a circle using Canva.com and printed it out and stuck it. I scored the interior of the menu card into a two-fold menu
according to the customer preferences.

This is a 3D model (picture) of my final design for my menu design. This is the final design that I is developed from one of my design ideas that I did earlier. The size of this menu (unfolded) is A4 which is a perfect size considering its big enough so
that information can be easily read and does not look cluttered and unprofessional. Using my existing market research I have developed this product being careful about the customer preferences, the current market trends and the specifications
of the menu holder provided by the company. I have used a chevron pattern for the background as most people in my survey preferred it and have added 2 pictures to the front of the menu card so that it looks attractive and catches attention but
does not look overcrowded. The menu is two-fold according to the preferences of majority of the people in the survey and so that all necessary information can be equally divided. The real menu will be laminated which will give it a glossy finish and
the lamination will form a protective layer and it can be protected from some level of water and dust damage.

Evaluation:

• The design improved in terms of aesthetics, design and appearance

• A band added makes sure that the two-fold menu is portable since it
can be secured now and be easily moved from place to place
• I initially opted for a duplex board to make my menu card in terms of
its high quality printing properties; however as I evaluated my research I
found out that duplex board is not as durable, stiff and rigid as cardboard
and hence I am using cardboard for the menu card
• Because cardboard usually comes in a brown colour, I have decided
to cover the cardboard piece with chevron-printed paper to improve the
aesthetic of the product. I have made the design of the paper using Canva
software and printed it on a normal paper of glossy finish to make it
appealing.
Third-party feedback:

Strengths: Good use of colours, sketches and 3d designs to demonstrate

the the form and design of the product; details of the processes involved and
individual components are clearly visible as well

Improvements: A more concise evaluation and a more sophisticated, and

well-explained layout

Developments: The evaluation should be made into bullet points and a

conclusion should be added

Conclusion:

In my opinion, the final development of this design is more functional and has
a well-explained menu card layout than the previous one since it has labels
suggesting important information such as ‘Contact info’ and the ‘email id’
which helps the customers to contact the bakery/ organization electronically.
The main aesthetic, font, font size and pattern of the background has been
carried from the initial designs since it was already according to the
customer preferences as it was formulated from the surveys and market
research carried out.

I have followed the designs and aesthetics of my

initial design of POS Display (design 3) and have
developed it since it was made keeping in mind
the customer preferences, the client profile and
by observing the current market trends. I have
conducted surveys to know about what size,
colour, aesthetic, components to be included and
information people considered important and
necessary to be included on the POS Display.

I will be using double-sided adhesive tape for
the joining of my components on the POS
display. This doesn’t require any special skill
and can be easily done by any individual
without any prior training. It also does not
involve safety hazards which makes it safer
to be assembled.
- I initially wanted to opt for using Hot
glue gun for assembling my
components. However, hot glue can
be dangerous to use and if proper
safety measures are not followed it
can result in hand burns.
- Therefore, double-sided adhesive tape
seemed like the most viable option to
use.

1 Duplex board Duplex paper is made out of a 100% wood pulp and has a bleached lining on one side. It is also
known as Grey-back or White-back Duplex paper and is a form of paperboard or cardboard with
a double-sided grey or white colour. Since it has two plies/layers it is called a duplex board.
Duplex paper uses around half the paper that simplex paper uses and hence is more
environment-friendly and helps businesses to reduce material costs. Since it is anti-curl and has
stiff and rigid properties, it will cause the boxes to retain their shape and not get damaged. The
coating of duplex paper allows high-quality printing to take place which makes the product look
professional. Duplex board is available in multiple finishes to suit different preferences and is

CAKE TASTING BOX: EVALUATING AGAINST THE SPECIFICATIONS
Colour and Aesthetic:
In terms of the colour theme, the cake tasting box followed all the specifications such as
maintaining the colour theme of warm pink, having the sides of the box in checked
pattern which gives a warm and bakery feel. The brand label is in a ‘Cursive’ font as
per the specification. The background is also of a plain, warm pink colour so that the
components can stand out. The text also stands out since it is surrounded with
minimal images and designs which makes it clear to read.
Images:
I have added 2 images on either sides of the brand label as per the specification. I
didn’t go overboard with the images so that it looks professionalism and does not
looked cluttered and overcrowded.
Alignment:
I have centre-aligned the brand label as per the specifications. Most of the text on all sides of the box is centre-aligned for uniformity.
Compartments:
I have added separate compartments inside the box as stated in the specifications. This
allows for different flavours of the cake to be separated and viewed clearly and avoids them
getting mixed.
Material:
I have used duplex board material to make the box because of its high-quality print
properties and durability. It also doesn’t bend and maintains a rigid structure which suited
the needs for my cake-tasting box and that’s why I used it. It is also food-grade which fulfils
my specifications as well.
CAKE TASTING BOX: SPECIFICATIONS
1 The cake tasting box must be themed with the colour warm pink
2 The sides of the cake tasting box should have checked pattern to give it a warm bakery feel
3 The brand label should be in a cursive font and should be centre aligned on the box
4 Two small cake piece images should be on either side of the brand label
5 The cake-tasting box should comprise of nutrition information, company logo and barcode
6 The box shouldn’t be overcrowded with images and text and enough white space should be there to give it a professional look
7 The background should be of a plain colour for the components and designs to stand out
8 The text on the cake-tasting box should stand out so that it can be read from a distance
9 The box should have separate compartments
10 The box must be strong, durable and food-grade; it should be made from white food packaging paper
TESTING WITH CAKE
I placed some cake pieces of different flavours in the separate
compartments, and it fitted perfectly. The dividers seemed to
separate and differentiate the cake flavours correctly and users can
identify the flavours with ease. Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much
cake flavours available, so I tested with 4 different flavours that were
available near me.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:
For further developments, I can add a clear window to the top or side of my cake-tasting box. This will allow
customers to catch a glimpse of what is inside the box and as the flavours are going to be visible, it will make
the product aesthetically pleasing and will motivate customers to purchase.

Strengths Weaknesses

- Made up of durable material - The only weakness identified is that some customers might find it
- The product have been thoroughly tested and is proven to work harder to read cursive font so a clear, bold font used for the body
- Attractive and appealing design text and the brand label would be more suitable.
- Consists of dividers which makes classification of flavours easier
POINT OF SALE DISPLAY
EVALUATING AGAINST SPECIFICATION
Accessibility:
The menu-cards are easy to take since they are hanged on a hook. This makes it easy for users to take a
menu on the go with ease complying with the specifications. The POS also has a tray which holds the
cake-tasting box.
Design and Aesthetic:
The POS Display follows the same colour theme of warm pink as the rest of the products. The display
also has a chevron- patterned background with makes it look aesthetically pleasing and also fulfils the
specifications. I have placed the brand name in a cake-piece shaped image so that it makes it attractive
to look at.
Appealing attraction:
A spin-wheel game is also included in the POS Display which will attract customers and also increase
customer loyalty. It relies on the fact that, users can spin the wheel and get discounts on their purchases. It has followed the same
colour theme of warm pink as the rest of the products and has images relating to what is sold in the bakery.
Material selection: I have chosen different materials for different components of the POS Display which I have mentioned in great detail alongside dimensions earlier on in
this report. The main board is made of cardboard since it has durability properties and is an excellent base to hold the weight of the rest of the components. The tray of
the cake-tasting box is made up of duplex board material since it is lightweight but strong enough to hold the cake-tasting box. The POS holder is also made up of
cardboard because it needs to be strong and durable to hold the POS Display and its corresponding components.
POINT OF SALE DISPLAY: SPECIFICATIONS
1 The menus must be easy to take; a hook must be there where all the menus are hanged
2 The display should have a chevron background and must follow the same colour scheme as the rest of the products
3 The POS should contain a tray of considerable size to hold the cake-tasting box
4 The POS should have a Spin-wheel game which provides discounts and promotions to customers to grab attention
5 The Spin wheel should follow the same colour scheme and should contain appropriate food images wherever necessary
6 The brand name should be on the top of the display in a big, cake piece shape to grab attention of the customers
7 The POS should be strong and durable; must be able to hold all the components without falling or tilting
8 The POS display must be 3 dimensional
Strengths Weaknesses
- Attractive and appealing design and aesthetic - May not survive in all weather conditions; can get damaged if the POS display is kept
- Professional looking outside or is exposed to conditions such as rain.
- Made using durable material so the POS will last longs
- Fulfils the specifications

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:
For the POS Display, I would like to change the material from cardboard to PVC Foam board because it would allow direct
printing to the material and has high-quality printing results. It is also suitable for different weather conditions such as rain, and
sunny weathers which makes it more durable when compared to cardboard. It would also last longer, and less replacement
would be needed. It would make the product look more aesthetically pleasing and would same time since it wouldn’t need to be
covered in a different sheet of paper as designs can be directly printed on.

MENU CARD:
EVALUATING AGAINST SPECIFICATIONS:
Design and Aesthetic:
I have followed the same colour scheme of warm pink and choose a chevron-patterned background as per the specifications. The
brand label is also clearly visible on the front of menu card and some pictures relating to what is sold in the bakery is present on the
front. I haven’t gone overboard with pictures as that would look unprofessional and cluttered as mentioned in the specifications.
Sizing:
Following the specification, I have used A4 size for the menu card as it was perfect enough for it be easily held by hand and not too big
as well. This size allowed me to fit all of the necessary information that needs to be put in without overcrowding the menu card and by
leaving enough space in between so that it can look professional.
Text:
I have used a cursive font to display the brand-label on the front of the menu card and made sure that its clearly visible. My selection for
this font relies on the market research that I have done and also because it is what the customers preferred in the survey that I carried
out. The main body text is also in a cursive but clear font as that’s what the customers preferred and it also went well with the design
and aesthetic of the bakery.
Details on the menu card:
The inside of the menu-card has two columns; one with the bakery items and the other corresponding column with their prices. The inside also has details like the email-
address to electronically contact the bakery and the phone number as mentioned in the specifications. The menu card also display if the bakery items are in packs as
that was a requirement of the specification.
MENU CARD: SPECIFICATIONS
1 The menu must follow the same theme and colour scheme of warm pink

2 The background of the menu card should be of chevron pattern

3 The brand label ‘Devour’ must be clearly visible on the front of the menu card
4 The menu card should only be folded twice

5 Menu card should have pictures of food items sold in the bakery but it shouldn’t be overcrowded
6 The menu should be big enough to hold and shouldn’t be too small for the information to be cluttered; it should be A4 size
7 On the front of the menu, at least one relevant picture should be there

8 The main body of the menu card must be simple and easy to read; its should be in a font that can be easily read and is clear.
9 There should be two columns; one with the names of the food items in the bakery; and the corresponding column with their prices
10 Contact details should be clearly mentioned in the menu card
11 The menu should be easy to understand and if food items comes in packs it should be mentioned alongside it.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:
For the Menu card, I would like to add a QR code that stores important electronic information that can be accessed
when the QR is scanned by the mobile phone/tablet. The QR code can hold information such as location map
details to the bakery, the bakery website and a feedback link form.
COMMENT ON THE OVERALL PROJECT:
I truly believe that the project has been made to high stands and accuracy and has followed the specifications correctly and fully. The
project has been made after immense research regarding the existing products, the market research and by observing current market
trends and customer preferences. Numerous efforts have been taken to research the customer preferences from creating and distributing
surveys to taking client feedback after important procedures. I was quite satisfied by the overall results of the products as it was exactly
how I wanted it to turn out. The cake-tasting box was formulated to meet the need of customers when they face a clash of choices when
choosing a cake flavour for any important upcoming events. This was carefully solved after conducting a lot of research on the solution that
I formulated. The report clearly explains how this problem is solved. The cake-tasting box has been tested with flavours of cake that I could
find in my house and it proved to work. The dividers did a good job at classifying the different flavours. My final products resemble my initial
3D models a lot which is what I wanted it to be. I have gained numerous skills while making this project which will prove to be of use in my
life. The products also fitted the client demands and they were durable enough for the purpose. I have also added further developments for
each product which will improve the products even more.
Conclusion: The overall products fitted the required components, client needs, and specifications. The colour scheme chosen was attractive and appealing for the
customers and gave a bakery feel to the to the overall products because of different designs used in the products. The designs were made sure to be professional and
the materials were durable enough to hold the products and be successful when tested.
