Breakage of fixing bolts of the protective grating for T/C
Dept. Manager K. Kubo
gas inlet
Section Chief K. Sasaki
(Inside the Exh. gas receiver)
Drawn By N. Inoue
ENGINE TYPE S26MC, L/S35MC, S42MC

Recently, we were reported the breakage of fixing bolts which are located inside the Exh. gas
receiver to fix the protective grating (wire gauze) on the way of T/C gas inlet casing.
And this phenomenon was reported from the vessels after delivery 10 years and more.
If these bolts are broken, there might be a possibility to break the protective grating and fly into the
T/C casing.
Therefore, we would like to recommend the checking of these bolts in accordance with the following
procedure.

1. Breakage situation of the bolts

A lot of bolts were found in the T/C casing. And some of them broke into the nozzle ring and
blades were damaged.
They were found to be the fixing bolts of wire gauze on investigation, and they were corroded.

Photo-1, 8 pieces of 12 bolts were broken.(Type S35MC)

2. Architecture
Protective grating (No.41 or 57) is fixed by the support (No.38 or 56). And the support is fixed on
the T/C inlet pipe from inside of Exh. gas receiver by using 12 pieces bolts with distance
pieces(*1). This protective grating is designed in order to block the foreign matter in to the T/C
casing.

(*1) The locking plates(40) are applied to some old type engines (Fig1-b). But, The distance pieces
are applied to latest type (Fig.1-a, Fig.2) in order to upgrade the heat resistance.
Therefore, We would like to recommend to change to the distance piece for upgrade in this
opportunity.

3. Checking procedure
In our instruction, there is recommendation about the checking interval of protective grating
every 8,000Hr.. And, when checking the protective grating, there are two procedures, by
removing the T/C inlet pipe with the protective grating(Type 26MC, 35MC), and removing the
fore end cover of Exh. gas receiver to reach the protective grating (Type 42MC).

3.1 Procedure (Type 26MC, 35MC)

a) Remove the insulation cover around the T/C inlet pipe.
b) Remove the T/C inlet pipe include the protective grating.
c) Remove all bolts (with distance pieces) for support (38) and clean these parts.
d) Check the corrosion and penetrating test for all bolts and protective grating.
e) Fix the protective grating by support. Tightening up torque is 70Nm

3.3 Countermeasure
To renew the protective grating and bolts, if these conditions as below are observed .
a) Breakage of the bolts.
b) Breakage of the protective grating.
c) Corrosion is observed on the bolts and protective grating.

The material for the bolts and protective grating has a resistance to corrosion. Then, when
needed these parts, you are kindly requested to place a purchase order to our service section.
