Radiation Dose Limits and Dosimetry

Radiation Dose Limits

• ICRP Dose limits speculations are there

• In 1928 ICRP Published basic recommendations

• Aims to prevent Deterministic effects

• To control Stochastic effects

Principles of Radiological Protection
Based on Scientific studies, the principles of radiological protection are

Justification of Practice

Optimization of Practice

Dose Limitations
Justification of Practice

• Exposure should be less than the expected Benefit with the study

• Use of Radiation can be justified in the field of medicine, agriculture and research

• Use of Radiation can not be justified in toys of kids and jewelry

Optimization of Protection

• Higher the implementation of protection, higher the safety

• Optimize the range of protection so that the expenditure can be bought down

• As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) must be strictly practiced

Dose Limitation

• Practice procedures in adequate dose limits

• Natural background radiation and Radiation from medical procedures are

excluded from dose limits

• Any practice without consent from the competent authority is illegal and
punishable
Dose Limit for Radiation Workers
World wide people who work with radiation follows ICRP recommendations

ICRP recommends radiation workers to limit effective dose to

20 millisieverts (mSv) per calendar year averaged over five years
(100 mSv in 5 years)
&
50 mSv in any one year
Internal Radiation Exposure

• A person may receive internal or external radiation exposure

• Radiation can also enter the body through Injection, Inhalation, wounds or absorption

by skin

• Dose limits are the same irrespective of the route which the radioactive substance

enters the body

Dose Limits to Members of Public

Dose received to the public must not exceed 1 mSv

from al source of radiation because member of public includes pregnant woman

and children
Exposure to Apprentices and trainees

• Minimum age group must be 18 years of age

• Dose limitations must be kept at 5mSv per year

• Trainees must never be unattended for procedures involved with Radiation

Dose limit for pregnant female worker

When a female worker is occupationally exposed during the normal operations

and has announced her pregnancy in writing, her work shall be arranged so that
the equalent dose to the fetus is as low as reasonably achievable and shall not
exceed 1mSv for the reminder of the pregnancy
