Global Literacy
Global Literacy
- Definition: Addressing issues of globalization, racism, diversity, and social justice (Gou, 2014). This
means it is the ability to understand and critically engage with global issues, such as globalization,
racism, diversity, and social justice.
- Goal: Empowering students with knowledge and action to make a positive impact in the world and
their local community (Gou, 2014). It involves being knowledgeable about the interconnectedness of
societies, cultures, economies, and environments across the world.
Promoting global literacy is crucial because it helps individuals gain a broader perspective of the world.
By understanding different cultures, histories, and perspectives, people can develop empathy and
tolerance, which are essential for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Additionally, global
literacy encourages awareness of how individual and collective actions can influence global dynamics,
including environmental sustainability, human rights, and economic development. This awareness
empowers individuals to make informed decisions that contribute positively to both their local
communities and the world as a whole.
Slide 2:
- Importance of Global Literacy:
- Promotes understanding of humanity and the planet.
- Encourages awareness of the impact of human decisions.
Slide 3:
- According to Ontario Ministry of Education, 2015, a global citizen should possess the following
characteristics:
1. Respect for humans regardless of race, gender, religion, or political perspectives. Meaning a global
citizen should not discriminate others because they are black or white, or because they are members of
LGBTQ, or because they are roman Catholic, Muslim, or any others religions and/or they have political
perspective not inline with yours. We have to be globally literate and understand that we have different
views in life and we should respect each other.
2. Respect for diversity and various perspectives. Like what is said earlier, we should respect each other
even if we have various/different perspectives. We should also respect each others culture and
traditions.
3. Promotion of sustainable patterns of living, consumption, and production.
4. Appreciation of the natural world and respect for the rights of all living things.
