PUTNAM COUNTY- John
Deere is a well-known and
long-trust name in the farming
business. But where did it all
start?
It all began back in 1837
when John Deere himself re-
located from his home-state of
Vermont to Illinois. At the time,
Deere was the bread-winner for
his young and struggling fam-
ily. His skills as a blacksmith
were in dire need in Illinois.
Upon arriving at their new
home, Deere noticed how the
farmers struggled with the na-
tive land. He thought he could
build something more effective
for them. His first plow was
made of broken a saw blade.
Selling more than 100 plows
annually by 1841, he partnered
with Leonard Andrus to meet
the ever-growing demand.
In 1848 Deere changed his
partnership and moved to Mo-
line because of the water pow-
er, coal and cheaper transpor-
tation. In coming years there
were about 1,600 plows made
annually and Deere was look-
ing to expand his products.
In 1850 the name of the busi-
ness was Deere, Tate & Gould.
Other names of the business at
that time included: John Deere,
John Deere & Company, Deere
& Company, and Moline Plow
Manufactory.
Charles Deere took over the
reins in 1858 when his father
stepped down from the em-
pire he had built. Charles ran
the company for 49 years. In
the 1860s Charles sticks with
the company name of Moline
Plow Manufactory.
Hawkeye Riding Cultiva-
tor is the first Deere implement
suitable for riding, is intro-
duced in 1863. The next year,
John Deere gains the compa-
nys first patent for molds used
in casting steel plows. John
acquires two more within the
next year.
According to www.deere.
com, In 1867 Charles Deere
sues Candee, Swan & Co.,
a competitor, for trademark
infringement. The case has
precedent-setting implications
for trademark law. The Walk-
ing Cultivator was granted a
patent in 1867. Even though
farmers preferred to ride on a
cultivator, the low price of the
walking competitor was sell-
ing itself. In 1868 the company
is incorporated as Deere &
Company.
Through-out the companys
175 year history there have
only been eight leaders, many
of them related to John and
Charles. The eight leaders in-
clude: John Deere, Charles
Deere, William Butterworth,
Charles Deere Wiman, Wil-
liam Hewitt, Robert Hanson,
Hans Becherer and Robert W.
Lane.
Many problems that have
plagued Deere & Company
from the beginning are still
giving them trouble today.
We live in interesting
times in no small part because
our industry operates at the
confluence of several powerful
global trends, stated Samuel
R. Allen, Chairman & Chief
Executive Officer of Deere &
Company during a speech giv-
en in May of 2011 in Chicago.
First of all, a steadily grow-
ing population will result in at
least 30 percent more people to
feed, shelter and clothe in the
next 40 years.
Just to complicate things,
this must be done with basi-
cally the same amount of land,
water and other inputs such as
fertilizer. And speculation still
abounds over the effects of cli-
mate change on food produc-
tion. Put another way, in the
next few decades, agriculture
will be called on to produce
more food than in the previous
10,000 years, with little or no
increase in resources.
Most of the productive
agricultural land is already be-
ing farmedClean water is
becoming increasingly scarce,

By Agriculture Secretary
Tom Vilsack
Recently I traveled to North
Carolina and Virginia to view the
damage from Hurricane Irene, sur-
vey the response efforts, and meet
with local residents. This trip was
my fourth in as many months to
make sure that the USDA is help-
ing families rebuild and recover
from natural disasters including
tornados, wild fires, floods and
drought.
So Ive seen how tough times
are affecting folks across the na-
tion, and particularly our farmers
and ranchers. Unusual weather
patterns have driven thousands of
Americans from their homes, and
threatened their livelihoods. And
my heart goes out to all of those
who have been touched by these
disasters.
Over the past months, USDA
has worked to minimize damage to
homes, businesses, crop land, and
property. And most importantly,
we have focused on protecting the
American people and getting them
on the road to recovery as quickly
as possible.
For farmers, ranchers and grow-
ers who have seen their crops deci-
mated by drought, flood or other
disasters, this year reminds us of
the critical importance of main-
taining a strong safety net. Produc-
ers have already received more
than $1.6 billion in crop insurance
payments for their losses this year
on top of emergency program
support worth $160 million. And
USDA has looked for additional
flexibility in our programs to offer
credit and support to help families
and farm operations rebuild.
Despite these challenges,
American agriculture is as resilient
as ever. In fact, according to UD-
SAs new estimates, farm income is
at an all time high, and even adjust-
ing for inflation this will be the best
year since the mid-1970s. Net farm
income is up more than 30 percent
over last year. And it will mean
higher incomes for farm families.
We are also in the middle of a
record year for agricultural exports,
which we should match again next
year. This will help support more
than 1 million American jobs and
mean an agricultural trade surplus
of about $42.5 billion.
I know how hard these times
can be. I have seen firsthand fami-
lies whose crops were destroyed by
a hurricane, or whose fields were
covered by several feet of water.
But I have also watched an im-
pressive response, as USDA has
worked with farmers and ranchers
across the nation to make it through
these difficult times.
These natural disasters have
challenged us as a nation. But
despite the setbacks, American
agriculture is thriving. The men
and women who own and operate
Americas farms and ranches are
some of the most resilient in the
world. And I know that with their
continued dedication and hard
work, we will maintain the strength
and profitability of American agri-
culture, and its work to provide
food to the nation.
Agriculture is resilient through disaster
VTF introduces new technology
for cover crop seeding
(www.vantilburgfarms.com)
In the last 3 to 4 years there is
a renewed interest in year round
crops. Producers are learning the
need for active soil 12 months out
of the year. Cover cropping; an
environmentally sound and fun-
damentally beneficial practice is
resulting in better soil erosion con-
trol and fertility improvements.
Cover crops are improving soil
tilth, protecting the soil surface
by reducing sealing, and binding
the nitrogen and phosphorus to the
ground keeping it out of our local
lakes and streams. The soil is rich-
er and giving back better yields.
Currently producers can only
seed their cover crop by air or
drilling. Both methods have cer-
tain limitations. Drilling prior to
harvest is not an option and aerial
application results in inaccurate
seed rating and canopy clearance
issues. Seeding the crops early
will lead to better germination due
to the cover provided by the crops.
The optimum time to seed cover
crops in soybeans is when 15% to
25% of the leaves are turning yel-
low. For corn the optimum time to
seed is when the stalks are dry up
to the ears or when the sunlight
hits 25% of the soil.
VTF believes the best practice
for cover cropping is inter-seeding
directly into standing crops. Over
the past three years VTF has been
researching the need for cover
crops in our own operation as well
as in our local community. We have
successfully designed a seeder that
will improve your cover cropping
process. Advantages with this new
technology are cover crops estab-
lishing an early stand which al-
lows more time for growth, seed-
ing in windy conditions, even
application (no streaks), and pro-
vides more opportunities to har-
vest during wet seasons. VTF can
seed rye, clover, peas and radishes
or a mixture of these. Our equip-
ment has 90 booms to minimize
tracking and 6 crop clearance for
seeding in standing corn, on board
scales and metered seed for accu-
rate seeding rate.
Call Matt VanTilburg or Joe
Beiler (419-586-3077) to discuss
our ability to seed your cover crops
in the 2011 season and ask about
our seed availability. We currently
carry a wide variety of cover crop
seed and we will deliver.
Working Together. Winning Together.

TM

Serving the Area with Fast Efficient Service
What are the benefits of AgroSoil
TM
?
The application of AgroSoil
TM
is highly beneficial to crops because it greatly improves the soil environ-
ment.
Improved Soil Tilth Improved Root Penetration Improved Water Infiltration
Reduction of Mold Problems Improved Nitrogen Uptake Reduction of Soil Erosion
Both Purdue University and Ohio State University research indicates that gypsum also offsets the im-
pact of aluminum toxicity in low pH soils, helps curb phosphorus runoff and increases iron uptake by
reducing the effect of bicarbonates. AgroSoil
TM
will not affect the soils pH, so it is not a replacement for
other applications that adjust the pH of the soil.
How is it applied?
Because of AgroSoils fine granular consistency, it can be aplied using a standard lime spreader or simi-
lar spreading device. You can apply AgroSoil
TM
anytime that fields are suitable for application without
damaging the crop or the soil itself.
Most farmers choose to apply AgroSoil
TM
one to two times per year at a rate of about one ton per acre,
in the fall post harvest and/or in the spring prior to planting. Depending on the quality of your soil, ap-
plication rates up to two tons per acre may be beneficial in many cases.

too, not only for basic human
needs, but also as a means to
water crops and provide food
for the fast-growing popula-
tion. Today, roughly two-thirds
of the worlds fresh water is
used by agriculture.
How can we close the pro-
ductivity gap defined by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture
as the difference between to-
days rate of farm-productivity
growth and the rate required to
meet future demands? For one
thing, how can we not? Failing
to do so, or not acting quickly
enough, means additional hu-
man suffering through hunger
and malnutrition, perhaps on a
wide scale. Obviously, that is
not acceptable. For a company
like John Deere, which has a
long history of improving the
quality of life and promoting
human flourishing, it is a cause
of great concern.
In the early days of our na-
tion, John Deeres steel plow
paved the way for the settle-
ment and the eventual devel-
opment of much of America.
Today, our equipment is arm-
ing another economic revolu-
tion by helping feed, fuel and
clothe a growing population.
In this way, we are supporting
greater prosperity around the
world. And we are furthering
our corporate mission of serv-
ing those linked to the land.
Deere & Company is a
world leader in providing ad-
vanced products and services
and is committed to the suc-
cess of customers whose work
is linked to the land - those who
cultivate, harvest, transform,
enrich and build upon the land
to meet the worlds dramati-
cally increasing need for food,
fuel, shelter and infrastructure.
Since 1837, John Deere has de-
livered innovative products of
superior quality built on a tra-
dition of integrity. For more in-
formation, visit John Deere at
its worldwide website at www.

A $2,500 donation can go
a long way to help rural com-
munities. It can fund rescue
equipment for a local fire de-
partment, purchase new books
to fill a school library or help
stock shelves for the local food
pantry. Now, farmers in 64 coun-
ties in Ohio can do their part to
plant the seed to help grow their
community by signing up for the
second annual Americas Farm-
ers Grow Communities. This
program, sponsored by the Mon-
santo Fund, gives farmers the
chance to direct $2,500 to their
favorite community nonprofit.
Participation in the first
annual Grow Communities
program was incredible, with
nearly 50,000 farmers signing
up for the chance to support
their local communities, said
Deborah Patterson, Monsanto
Fund president. Farmers across
the country made this program a
huge success, and we are thrilled
to announce that farmers again
have the opportunity to help
grow their communities.
Grow Communities was
created to benefit nonprofit
community groups such as ag-
riculture youth organizations,
schools and other civic groups
that are important to Americas
farmers.
For Richard Cox, farmer in
Grant County, the opportunity
to help grow his community
became a reality when he was
selected as a Grow Communi-
ties winner in January 2011. I
thought this was a great opportu-
nity to support FFA, said Cox.
Its important to keep kids in
agriculture because if we dont,
what are they going to eat? Be-
ing in FFA helps students learn
leadership, animals, grain pro-
duction and general ag; every-
thing a farm kid should know.
This year, the program has
expanded to include a total of
1,245 counties. The addition of
41 new counties (based on Janu-
ary 2011 USDA data for corn,
cotton and soybeans and 2007
Census data for vegetables) will
result in an additional $102,500
in donations. In Ohio, the Mon-
santo Fund will invest a total of
$160,000 toward nonprofit orga-
nizations in rural communities.
Now through Nov. 30, 2011,
farmers can apply online at
www.growcommunities.com,
or call 1-877-267-3332 to apply
by phone. A $1 donation will be
made to local United Way chap-
ters for each farmer who signs
up, to further enhance the in-
vestment in rural communities.
Farmers who meet program
eligibility requirements may
enter regardless of involvement
with previous Grow Communi-
ties programs.
Farmers, age 21 and over,
who are actively engaged in
farming a minimum of 250 acres
of corn, soybeans and/or cotton,
or 40 acres of open field vegeta-
bles, or at least 10 acres of toma-
toes, peppers and/or cucumbers
grown in protected culture are
eligible. The program is open
