MISSING DATA_(Solutions)

First complete the table with the help of the facts provided as shown below:
No. of females = 32

Average Good Excellent Total

Male 16 48 – (16 + 10) = 22 10 80 – 32 = 48
Female (40 – 16) = 24 30 – 22 = 8 - 32
Total 80–(30+10)=40 30 x/2-30=10 X=80

But 40% of the students were females.

∴ Total no. of students = (100/40 x 32) = 80
No. of male students = (80-32) = 48
∴ No. of male students who were average
= (1/3 x 48) = 16

Q.1 No. of students who are both female and excellent = none.

Q.2 Proportion of female students who are male

22 11
   0.73.

32 4

Q.4 (c)
No.of students who are both male and good = 22.

Q.5 (d)

Q.8 (a)

Date Days Mins Classes

4 Thursday 60 Dance
5 Friday 100 Karate
6 Saturday 110 Swimming
7 Sunday - -

Q.9 (c)
(i) Average runs scored in the 1st innings = 67.5
Total score = 67.5 × 4 = 270.0
(ii) Average runs of Sachin = 72.5
Total runs of Sachin = 72.5 × 4 = 290
So, the runs made by Sachin in 3rd innings = 290 - 80 - 70 - 80 = 60
(iii) Total score in the 4th innings = 270 (from 7)
Now, let Paramjeet`s, Dhooni`s and Jeetu`s scores in 4th innings be x, x and y.
=> 2x + y + 80 = 270
=> 2x + y = 190 ..…(i)
Let Jeetu`s and Dhooni`s scores in 1st innings be p and q, respectively.
=> p + q + 80 + 60 = 270
=> p + q = 130 ..…(ii)

2
From 2:
i.e. 6p - x = 170 ..….(iii)
From 5: Jeetu`s and Dhooni`s scores in 2nd innings are p - 10 and q - 10,
respectively.
=> Jeetu`s total runs = 220
=> p + p - 10 + 60 + y = 220
2p + y = 170 ..….(iv)
Solving (i) and (iv), we get 2x - 2p = 20 ……(v)
Solving (iii) and (v), we get x = 46 and p = 36
From (i) and (ii),
y = 98 and q = 94
Thus,

1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total

Sachin 80 70 60 80 290
Paramjeet 60 50 60 46 216
Jeetu Malik 36 26 60 98 220
Dhooni 94 84 76 46 300
Total 270 230 256 270 1026

In 2nd innings, Jeetu Malik scored the lowest.

Q.10 (c)
(i) Average runs scored in the 1st innings = 67.5
Total score = 67.5 × 4 = 270.0
(ii) Average runs of Sachin = 72.5
Total runs of Sachin = 72.5 × 4 = 290
So, the runs made by Sachin in 3rd innings = 290 - 80 - 70 - 80 = 60
(iii) Total score in the 4th innings = 270 (from 7)
Now, let Paramjeet`s, Dhooni`s and Jeetu`s scores in 4th innings be x, x and y.
=> 2x + y + 80 = 270
=> 2x + y = 190 ..…(i)
Let Jeetu`s and Dhooni`s scores in 1st innings be p and q, respectively.
=> p + q + 80 + 60 = 270
=> p + q = 130 ..…(ii)
From 2:
i.e. 6p - x = 170 ..….(iii)
From 5: Jeetu`s and Dhooni`s scores in 2nd innings are p - 10 and q - 10,
respectively.
=> Jeetu`s total runs = 220
=> p + p - 10 + 60 + y = 220
2p + y = 170 ..….(iv)
Solving (i) and (iv), we get 2x - 2p = 20 ……(v)
Solving (iii) and (v), we get x = 46 and p = 36
From (i) and (ii),
y = 98 and q = 94
Thus,

3
1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total
Sachin 80 70 60 80 290
Paramjeet 60 50 60 46 216
Jeetu Malik 36 26 60 98 220
Dhooni 94 84 76 46 300
Total 270 230 256 270 1026

Lowest runs were scored in 1st innings by Jeetu Malik.

Solutions for (11 – 16)

Gautam 5
Ashish 1 15
Nitish 4
Munish 5 1
Tarun 2 2 13

Using conditions (i), (iii) and (v) we can say Tarun scored third highest in CR as he has
to score 5 and 1 in QA and LR, not necessarily in that order. Also, Ashish or Gautama
cannot score 5 in LR because then the other person among the two will have to score 4
points which is not the case. Also, Ashish cannot score highest in DI or RC and hence
scored 5 points in QA. This leads to the following table:

QA LR DI CR RC Total Points
Gautam 4 5
Ashish 5 1 15
Nitish 4
Munish 5 1
Tarun 2 3 2 13

Using condition (iii) we can say Nitish scored 5 points in CR and Tarun in LR. Thus,
Tarun scored 1 in QA and Nitish scored 1 point in DI and Gautam in LR.

QA LR DI CR RC Total Points
Gautam 4 1 5
Ashish 5 1 15
Nitish 4 1 5
Munish 5 1
Tarun 1 5 2 3 2 13

Using conditions (iv) and (vii), we can further fill the table as:

QA LR DI CR RC Total Points
Gautam 4 1 4 4 5 18
Ashish 5 2 3 1 4 15
Nitish 2 4 1 5 3 15
Munish 3 3 5 2 1 14
Tarun 1 5 2 3 2 13

4
Q.11 Gautam scored 18 points

Q.12 Munish scored 3rd highest in LR

Q.13 Gautam scored less than 5 and more than 1 in 3 tests

Q.14 Munish scored 3rd highest in 2 tests

Q.15 Munish scored 14 points

Q.16 Highest points-18

(Solutions for 17 to 21)

Also Zoya, Kate and Latika get total marks in the range 21 to 23 while Frida gets in the
range 19 to 21.

Similarly the sum of marks obtained in Optics is in the range 19 to 21 while sum of the
marks obtained in Life Sciences, Public Services and Finance are in the range 21 to 23.
Since total marks obtained in all subjects are different therefore sum of marks obtained
in Optics will be 19 or 20.
As marks obtained by Frida in Optics is 6, therefore the sum of marks obtained in Optics
will be 20.
Marks obtained by Frida will also be equal to 20.
Marks obtained by Zoya in Optics and Frida in Public Services will be 7.

Now if two cases are considered, which are as follows:

Case I: Kate obtained 3 marks in Optics
Students Optics Life Sciences Public Sciences Finance Total
Zoya 7 5/6 4/3 6/5 22/21
Kate 3 5/6 6/5 7/8 21/22
Frida 6 4/3 7 ¾ 20
Latika 4 8 5/6 6/5 23
Total 20 23/22 22/21 21/23 -

Case II: Kate obtained 4 marks in Optics

Students Optics Life Sciences Public Service Finance Total
Zoya 7 5/6 4/3 6/5 22/21
Kate 4 6/5 5/6 8 23
Frida 6 3/4 7 4/3 20
Latika 3 7/8 6/5 5/6 21/22
Total 20 21/23 22/21 23/22 -

d. Kate obtained 7 marks in Finance. The new table will look like

5
Students Optics Life Sciences Public Service Finance Total
Zoya 7 5/6 4 6/5 22
Kate 3 6/5 5/6 7 21
Frida 6 4 7 3 20
Latika 4 8 6/5 5/6 23
Total 20 23 22 21 -
