1. DIALOGUE SESSION AT SUNGAI BULOK

Today we (Irene, Saroja Devi. Annie and Nadiah) went to visit the Cambodian Community
Leaders at Banting. Our main motive is to communicate with them in friendly manner and to
find out what their needs. Furthermore, how they earn income for their daily use, how they
felt living in Malaysia and their current situation.
1st Interviewed; -
Sakirah
She said she living in Malaysia more than 22 years. She came to Malaysia to earn money
because earning money at Cambodia is very much difficult. Sakirah said here people can earn
money by working at restaurant, shops, by sewing, or by doing small businesses by
themselves but in Cambodia it is very difficult. To get a work permit they need to come out
with RM3000.00. This money is the agent charges for renewing the permit. If process is in
illegal way it will cause more. If found guilty they will get fined said Sakirah. Irene
questions her weather she like to apply for a permit. She said she wished to and tried to apply
for it, but it is not that easy to acquire. She said it will cost a very high amount. They do not
have a proper channel or procedure to apply a permit. Most of them get cheated said Sakirah.
She has spent RM 3000.00 for a trip only to enter Malaysia not included the passport charges.
Next swe went to meet Sarifah, Roviyah, Rotiyah, Habsah. Alvy brought us to meet them.
He also participated in this interview. Irene started to introduce herself and the staff who
followed her to them. She asked them why they are in Malaysia. They said they are living
here, in Malaysia more than 18 years. Some said 10 years and some said 4 years. They spend
more than RM3000.00 only for their trip charges. Not including the passport. In case any
women in their group gave birth they spend RM3000.00 for normal birth. If complicated
cases caused very expensive said Roviyah. They said that in Cambodia very hard to earn
money. Getting a job is very difficult. Even those who work in their land growing vegetables
could now see much profit to run their family. It will long a long time to get better earnings.
So, he cannot wait for a long time. He needs to find ways to earn money. Over here can
work at the factory, can do sewing, can do their own business to earn money. When Irene
question them about whether they are undocumented or documented, they answered most of
them are undocumented. They came to Malaysia in an illegal way. (By bus from Golok
(Thailand border)- Rantau Panjang (1 night) travelling. Irene question them whether they
wished to stay here long. They said they wished but most of the time get cheated by the
agent. Now some agents charged them 5,000.00-10,000.00(Malaysian ringgit). It is also not
confirmed that they will get the permit. The Cambodian Embassy is not helpful to their
people. All are corrupted said Alvy. Children here cannot get proper education said Alvy and
other women. Added that their children’s future is a question mark. Private institute charge
very expensive said Rohiyah. They charged from RM1000.00 to RM2,000.00 Ismak sending
their children to private schools for English, and Mandarin language. It cost a very high
amount to pay said her sister Sakirah. Getting Birth certificates for their children is also very
difficult and a long process said Sakirah. Sometimes they have to spend RM10,000.00 for the
birth certificate but sometimes they also get cheated in getting the Birth Certificate. They said
they earn money by doing sewing clothes. For per dress, they sew they only earn RM3.00. It
will be accumulated and their salary will be paid once a year only said Sarifah, Roviyah,
Rotiyah, Habsah and Alvy. One of the participant’s husbands is working as a chicken butcher.
He gets paid daily RM50 .00 only for his work. Their house rental cost RM400.00 and the
owner of the house is a Cambodian who are holding a Blue Identify card. One of the
participants named as Ismak told that she finds it very much difficult to renew her passport.
She has been cheated a few times by giving money for the renewal process. (Agent) So these
are the situations whereby this Cambodian community people facing in their daily life. At the
end, they told that they are wished to return to their own country but the problem is it hard for
them to earn money here at the moment.
