REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Related Literature

The following literatures support this study entitled “Growth Performance of Bok Choy

(Brassica rapa)”.

Hydroponics is the method of farming that uses a water based nutrient solutions instead

of soil. Compared to the traditional method, this method uses less soil, less space, less water with

a growth-rate of 30-50 percent faster. This method is reusable and can also decreases carbon

footprint. Per acre, vertical farming has the ability to construct 10 up to 20 times in comparison

with traditional farming. In other cities, in order to make more foods accessible and to reduce the

distance needed to transport food products from farmers to buyers, vertical farming can also be

done with hydroponics, aquaponics or aeroponics can be fulfilled in such areas.

In the Philippines, they have various hydroponic systems that have the capability to grow

different plantings. Due to its eco-friendly benefits and probability to supply high-quality food at

cheap costs, hydroponic farming is increasing in popularity. The Department of Agriculture

(DA) supports and will assist this method in achieving its objective of enhancing the nation's

agricultural sector by assisting in achieving food security in metropolitan areas across the nation

and securing a supply of fruits and vegetables (Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat, 2022).
